AP - Convert curve to selection

Recommended Posts

Affinity Photo: I'm struggeling  with converting a closed path (curve) to a selection - and if possible even adding a closed path to extend an existing selection.
Can anyone help me on this one?

Cheers, Timo

Select the curve layer, choose the Pen Tool and press the 'Selection' button on the Context toolbar to convert the selected curve to a selection. If you already have another selection on the image it will be lost when you do this, so if you want to be able to get it back you need to right-click the 'Pixel Selection' item on the Channels panel and choose 'Create Spare Channel'; after converting the curve to a selection, right-click on the spare channel and choose 'Add To Pixel Selection' to retrieve the selection that you saved.

You're welcome, Timo. I don't remember where I came across that one, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't by hunting around the user interface. The 'Spare Channel' thing certainly wasn't!

Just Command-Click (Mac) on the curve's layer's thumbnail in the Layers Palette/Studio... (Works with Type – being vectors/curves too – as well) – quite similar to Photoshop, actually (you just have to remember to press the cmd-key while clicking, which – if I remember correctly – wasn't/isn't necessary in PS)!

What does the 'selection' button look like?

The ‘Selection’ button is a standard button with a text label. It should be displayed next to the ‘Mask’ button at the left-hand end of the Context toolbar, but both of those buttons will be greyed out if you don’t have a vector line or curve (as drawn, for example, by the Pen Tool) selected.

Is there an equivalent function in Designer?

Switch to the Pixel persona and CTRL+Click on the Layer's thumbnail (Windows 11)

I'm using a windows keyboard plugged into a mac.
If I select the layer with the curve and hit 'ctrl-click', nothing happens.

Is there an equivalent to this command in a menu somewhere?

Not sure how you are generating the CMD key with a Windows keyboard but try that
