In this test doc, I wanted to drag page 5 to before page 3. The page's text frame is on the master page layer. The result was two main text frames on the master layer for the moved page. The story was linked from page 2 to the first frame on page 3 and then the second frame before linking to the following page.

Reapplying the master page deleted the extra text frame and the links between frames were okay so it was easy to work around, just not what I expected.

A variant of the issue:

Moving a Page 2.afpub

  1. Open the document to page 5 - the red and black text is in master page frames. The top frame is empty on the master while the bottom has placeholder text on the master. The blue text is on the document page layer.
  2. Duplicate page 5. Page 5 is blank except for the blue text which was on the document page. The new page 6 has the red text which was in the empty master frame while there are now two black text frames (like the original issue in this thread), one with the original placeholder text and one with the text modified on the document page.

Page 6 can be fixed by re-applying the master but page 5 can't be fixed without manually copying the red text.

An issue raised in this thread ("Master content disappears from original page after duplicating page. With Move Master Content on") has now been reported to the developers by the testing team (Ref: AF-5788). Thank you very much for reporting this issue to us.

Equally, setting Rapply Masters under the Page Move Options before moving your page would achieve the same thing...

Again, selecting Reapply Master before duplicating Page 5 will duplicate Page 5 correctly. Moving the Master Page content appears to be doing just that though I'm unsure if it should be since you're duplicating the page...

Thank you, that explains it.

I think discoverability may be an issue. Users who move a single page with a text frame on a master page layer must select Page Move Options > Reapply Masters before moving the page or they will have bad results. Users won't know the option exists (I forgot and I've documented this) so they'll think it's a bug.

Perhaps the new Move Pages dialog could include the options from the panel menu since they are applicable there. I looked in that dialog last night when I forgot about the panel menu. I also looked in Document Setup but that has enough options already.

And likewise, when you drag move a page based on a master for the first time, perhaps you should be prompted to select a page move option in a popup that presents the same options. The popup could remind you that you could change the option later through the panel menu.

Thanks

I did wonder whether the Page Move Options could additionally be added to the Page Right Click menu since its actions are being applied directly to pages but maybe that overcomplicates things...

@Hangman Agreed but another issue may be the name. "Page Move Options" makes me think that it's only for when I move a page, but it's also for when a page is moved as the result of me adding or deleting a page. I had previously suggested renaming it to "Reflow Page Options" to describe it more broadly and to move the Reflow Pages command out of the submenu and above Reflow Page Options.
