@AHARRIS22 I'm not a map-maker and don't normally do this sort of thing, so perhaps someone better versed in this area can help you. But, I do have a few thoughts. Also, I'm using a Desktop version, not iPad.

First, it will help a lot if all the images use the same color profile, same scale, same resolution, identical magnification (whether scanned, photographed, screen grabs or whatever), and that they all have the same brightness and contrast. If not, you are more likely to see seams and color changes where the map sections meet one another.

I'd think it might be helpful to set up a grid to make sure all of your map segments remain perfectly straight and square.

Many old atlases I used (back in the Stone Age) typically had some overlap from one map page to the next. These overlaps can be your friend and can help you align two map segments, one over the other where the roads are identical. You'd have the two map segments on different layers. If you lower the opacity of the top layer temporarily, it ought to help you align the roads perfectly (zoom in for greater precision).

Where segments overlap (assuming they do overlap) you can add a mask to blend the two sections together and hide any borders, as shown below. Notice that the two maps did not align at the borders, so I had to shift one layer to the right so the roads lined up properly. The image still needs cropping, but at least the roads align properly and the maps blend together well. (click on the image below to enlarge it if required.)

Once all segments have been aligned, adjusted for brightness, contrast, saturation, etc (if needed), you can crop the final image using a rectangle in the Mask position, or physically crop the image.

Having not worked with maps myself, there are probably much better, faster and easier ways to do this. I wouldn't be surprised if there were programs or plugins that are designed for this express purpose. Hope this helps.

@AHARRIS22 Because you are working with maps rather than a set of photographs shot with the intent to stitch them, using a stitching app is going to be frustrated and frustrating.   I make large/very large panoramas using a specialized app, so I have some experience with this. For various technical reasons maps do not constitute a good starting point for a stitching app.

A lot depends on the level of accuracy you need/expect in your final product.  If rigor is not a factor, you may be able to use warp tools in Photo to get a satisfactory result.

If you need the best possible result, you might need a photogrammetry app, in which case you could check out the iOS App Store.  Public videos from the Apple WWDC suggest Apple has done a lot of work in this area over the past few years. I believe there are also on-line photogrammetry services, if that serves your purpose.

Are you able to upload all the maps for your project?

I do this with ADe by aligning adjacent maps (one at a time) using the features like roads and text as guides. It’s easier if each map is the same size but if not you can zoom in to get the latest imported map (important) the same size as the others. Locking and grouping them when completed helps.  Finally use the artboard tool to create a rectangle over all of them.

File > New Panorama

(Windows 11)

Seems to work well on the 2 images you have supplied

Would need to see the other 3 images to determine if that is all we need to do

Thanks for the info so far. I am not too worried about the quality doesn’t need to be perfect. Only be used as this is the area we are covering than actually using it to read from.

The other 3 images will go below.

The maps won’t perfectly aline as they are staggered slightly to cover different areas. It’s odd that the contrast is different as they were all created from OS Maps.

I will have a look at what you have all suggested and have a go and I will let you know how I get on.

Thank you.

I couldn’t get it to work on my iPad with Panorama. I have used this in the past for Panorama photos and not had any problems.

Can you save and upload the Affinity document (to the forum) with the panorama you get?

You're right! Panorama stitching worked great and fast.
