Expand stroke. Can not expand corners correctly? AD-V2 2.5.5_02/10/24

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,
I create a stroke sharped, but when try to expand to convert it in a shape vectorized, turn in to a curve. I think this is a bad bug.
I send an attach bellow to explain what happened.

"I've read a few posts on the topic of expanded paths and I can see that this creates errors. I think the tool should be revised. It can be fixed manually but it slows down the workflow as you can see."

(Working on Win11 desktop with Affinity Designer V2, 2.5.5 version).

Cheers.

Hi @ljfm,

It possibly depends on how you've constructed the shape in the first place...

Can you upload the file where you're seeing this happen so we can take a look...

Running a quick test, expanding the stroke works as expected but I'm pretty sure you didn't construct your 'G' in the same way...

Maybe it works, when the Stroke Align is set to Middle?

With an Open Curve, the stroke can only be set to Middle...

The screenshot tells something else. :D

Setting the stroke to inside or outside does not affect the stroke itself when the curve is open despite the change in the thumbnail appearance in the layers panel... the screenshot shows 'Align stroke to inside' in the stroke panel but the stroke itself still shows it is centre aligned...

@Hangman whether the arrowhead will be expanded correctly or not it depends of the the drawing direction of the line and on which end of the line the arrowhead is placed. This has something to do with `winding fill mode`

  1. Draw a line
  2. Turn on `Show orientation`
  3. If you place the triangle arrowhead on the node that has this red `Show orientation` indicator and red outline after expanding you will see that hole in the arrow
  4. If you place the arrowhead on the opposite node that one that doesn't have that `Show orientation` indicator (your example) the arrowhead expands correctly.

Hope this make sense for you Hangman:) There were requests while back ago that this doesn't work as expected in V2 while it worked fine in V1.

@bbrother,

Thanks for the link, that certainly appears to be the issue for the arrow though switching the Fill Mode to Winding doesn't fix the problem but at least it's already logged as a bug... Hopefully, we'll see a fix soon...
