Steve2010 Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Is there going to be cut out tall on designer as there is draw? To my knowledge all serif draw software had cut out tall and from the little I've used so far designer seems to be almost the same as draw apart from the fact there is no cutout tool? Is it going to stay that way? Kindest Regards Steve steve@theopinionsite.co.uk www.theopinionsite.co.uk
Staff Jon P Posted July 1, 2016 Staff Posted July 1, 2016 Hi Steve, I assume you are referring to the cutout studio that DrawPlus had. If you switch to the pixel persona and use the Selection Brush Tool you'll notice it behaves in the same way as the selection tool within the cutout studio that you will be used to, with add and subtract modes to help you make and refine your selection. You can use this to make a selection of the area you want to cut, then just delete that area from the rasterized layer :) Serif Europe Ltd. - www.serif.com
Dodgy Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 No cut-out tool in Affinity is a deal breaker. Cut-out tool is essential. Works so well in Draw. Yes Affinity is a Draw incarnation in every way with less user features. No minimise option on the palettes. Where is the 'Properties' flyout box from the left hand side like in Draw?

The Crop feature in DP is magic and works so well in every way.
Mark Ingram Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Hi, the aim of this release is to be in parity with the Mac version of Designer.
Dodgy Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Hi, the aim of this release is to be in parity with the Mac version of Designer. If this is the aim then they mustn't want DrawPlus users to buy Affinity Designer. Obviously I am under an incorrect assumption Affinity Designer was supposed to be an upgrade to DrawPlus. While it may be in some areas, essential, necessary and much used tools are missing. Having used DP to illustrate 11 books from what I see presently Affinity Designer is the poor relation. Where is the Shape Builder in Affinity Designer? Many of the well used QuickShapes are missing and to manually reproduce them is extensive work.
Staff MEB Posted July 1, 2016 Staff Posted July 1, 2016 Hi Dodgy, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) Affinity Designer is not an upgraded/expanded version of DrawPlus. It's an entirely new software (part of a new line of products) build from scratch and as such still lacks some features you find on other programs on the market for several years (DrawPlus included). While most basic tools may seem familiar, there's other areas where Affinity approach differ from the way things worked in DrawPlus. Likewise particular options/parameters you were used to find there don't have a direct equivalent in Affinity Designer. So, trying to find replacements for all these tools/workflows in Affinity will probably lead to a poorly experience and lots of frustration. Affinity Designer is already quite powerful in its current state if you give its own tools and workflow a chance (despite the missing features). You may be surprised to find news ways to solve problems that weren't possible or more difficult in DrawPlus. This is also true the other way around because Designer is still in its infancy, but those gaps should become narrower as Affinity development progresses. We are just at an early Beta stage which doesn't even have reached feature parity with the Mac version yet, so looking at it as a replacement for DrawPlus may not do it justice. If have questions or are having trouble performing some operations in Affinity Designer please go ahead as ask here in the Forums. There's already someone willing to help and a considerable number of video tutorials / learning resources available. A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
Staff TonyB Posted July 1, 2016 Staff Posted July 1, 2016 Jon P if you they think that is an acceptable workaround to the Crop feature in DP tell 'em they're dreamin. The Crop feature in DP is magic and works so well in every way. The brush selection tool and selection refinement -> Output new layer is light years ahead of the cut out feature in DrawPlus. I was involved with both implementations and know the results that can be achieved in both. The main advantage of the cut out studio in DrawPlus was it was aimed at users with little computer experience or ability. We will continue to improve the accessibility of these features over time.
