Crashing when opening Resource Manager to manage linked files

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have the same bug with Designer 2.5.3 on Windows 10 Pro, fully up to date. I am a web developer and a bit more, so I tried to find the cause of this bug and I think I found it.

The problem is linked to the artboard name length.

How to reproduce the bug :

  1. Create a simple file with one artborad and place an image in it (unite-centrale-acer-ecran-acer.afphoto).
  2. Rename the artboard to unite-centrale-acer-ecran-acer
  3. Open the resources manager and the app will crash
  4. Restart Designer2 and reopen the file, then rename the artbooard to unite-centrale-acer-ecran
  5. Open the resources manager (no crash)
  6. Rename the artboard to unite-centrale-acer-ecran-acerX (or any other char)
  7. Open the resources manager (no crash)
  8. Rename again the artboard again (add 1 character or more)
  9. Open the resources manager and the app will crash...

You maybe have a GitHub, but I am tired 🙂

Affinity is great!

Hi @arnofly,

I split this into a new thread since the issue the original thread was referencing was fixed.

I can't reproduce the crash you are seeing on Windows 10, both by following the recipe from scratch and opening your afdesign file and renaming the artboard. Are you able to upload a video and crash report to help see if that can help identify if I'm missing some steps?

Crash reports can be found at %userprofile%\.affinity\Designer\2.0\CrashReports

Hi @arnofly,

FWIW, I equally can't reproduce the crash following your recipe on Windows 10 which suggests the cause is likely something else...

Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5
MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse
HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi guys,

Sorry, too much work these days...

I downloaded my own files from here. I opened the afdesign file with Designer 2. After that, I renamed the artboard from the layers window (I just added one letter). Next, I tried to open the resources manager... and the software crashed again.

I found 2 locations of crash reports on Windows

  • "%userprofile%\.affinity" with Photo subdirectory, no Designer directory.
  • %appdata%\Affinity\Designer\2.0\CrashReports with many files that you will find as attachments

Please let's me know what's happening

I updated the driver of my graphic card to the last version, and test again the file, but always the same. The soft crash with no dialog box, any message, nothing.

I deleted the cache and the software still crash with this file, if i do the same. As developer, my universe is the web, not software, but honestly the problem is not my computer, even if it's quite old.

Thanks @arnofly.

I've had to add a lot more than one character (so I suspect it's maybe down to screen size or something related to the different size of the UI), but I have now reproduced this crash.

It's reproducible with any linked document that's placed on an artboard where the artboard name exceeds a certain length. I'll get this logged and have removed your archive from the above post.

Thanks for the report

You're welcome.

Because you talk about screen size, you should know that my screen is a 21:9 ultrawide (3440x1440), which isn't very common.

Also, you might find it interesting that I had a UI problem with EaseUS Todo Backup Home 12.0.0.2 (2020) because of my GTX 1050 TI graphics card. I contacted the dev team at the time, and they gave me a modified DLL (QtLib.dll) to replace the original and fix the bug. I'm not sure if this will help, but I'll attach the DLL file just in case.

My screen : https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocuments/Product_Docs/en/dell_ultrasharp_34_curved_monitor_u3417w_product_spec_sheet.pdf

I hope that will help.

DLL QtLib.7z
