Text around circle with top and bottom text, but can't edit top text

Recommended Posts

Hello.  I don't have V2. I'm thinking of upgrading and getting rid of Adobe Illustrator so I'm trying to figure out if I can swap.

My most common use is having text around circle.  I have two separate circles for text on the top and text on the bottom.  That's just the best way that it works for me,

So anyway.  My issue is this.  In illustrator, I simply double-click on the top text, or double-click on the bottom text and I can edit it.  In Affinity I can only edit the text on the top layer.  So if the bottom text is the top layer when I double click I can only edit the bottom text even if I'm double clicking on the text on the top.  It's very frustrating.  I don't want to change the layer hierarchy every time I want to change the text.

Is there a solution to this please? Happy to upgrade to 2 if it works, but want to make sure first.

Thank you.

Christine

No.  I purchased a version a few years ago.  Before I upgrade and start using full time I want to make sure I can make the switch.  I'm using version 1.10.8.

Thanks

That's why I would use the Trial version to see if it suits you before buying the new version.

I think the suggestion may have been to install the Trial of V2, so you can see. But as it's only a 7-day Trial, and as I don't recall any V2 changes in this area, I don't think I would suggest that.

Your problem is that you have two objects overlapping each other, and so when you try to click on the text at the top of the circle you're selecting the top object, which is the text at the bottom of the circle. Instead of a simple Left-click, try Alt+Left-click.

That's covered in the Help; see the box describing the Modifier Keys: https://affinity.help/publisher/en-US.lproj/pages/ObjectControl/select.html

Here is the file to show you what I mean.

Since the circles are the same size and overlap, even in the V2 version the top (layers order) text is always selected.

There is no need to change the hierarchy of layers - just make the top layer invisible, and make it visible again after editing the text.

I create a circle and duplicate it
To the bottom circle I add art text
Same for the top circle
Now I can only select the top text unless I turn that layer visibility off

If I change the order of the text layers then I can select either one with both layers visible, no need to keep changing the layer order
Same behaviour in V1 Photo and Publisher

Note that in the OP's example both texts are inside the circles, not like in your case where the top text is outside the circle.

As @walt.farrell suggested, holding down the Alt/Option key while using the Text tool (either Frame or Artistic), lets you alternate between overlapping text layers (the focus changes on each time clicked so if you want to select text, do it when you Alt+click the correct frame). If the Move tool is used, instead, the selection will alter between all overlapping layers (not just text layers).

Thanks everyone.  I'm not sure I understand.  Both of my text are inside the circle so I don't think it works.

walt.farrell mentioned using Alt and clicking and that works a treat so I'll carry on with that.

I really appreciate everyone's help.
