A simple white vector image is gray after exporting as png

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this is a bug or I'm doing something wrong, but when I attempt to export a simple vector image as a PNG, the final image is gray.  The image has a 3d FX on it.  When I apply a color to it, the color is also grayed out.  I tried to export directly from main menu, and through export persona -  same results.

Cant reproduce this issue. What i find a bit strange is that you dont have an ICC Profile chosen, yet the checkmark "Embed ICC profiles" is checked on. Have you tried unchecking the "Embed ICC profiles"-checkbox or set SRG in the "ICC profile:"-Dropdown?

I don't know what ICC means, but I never checked/unchecked it before and haven't had any troubles.  Just unchecked it and tried to save as PNG and the image still came out gray.  I have also just upgraded to v2.4.

Can you share your Affinity file, @Scripto?

Hi Walt,

Sorry (!) I'm not sure what that means either - do you mean that you want me to upload the entire Affinity file that contains the image?  If so that total file is 32 GB

If you can't do the whole file, then perhaps you can copy/paste the problem areas into a new file and share that.

I'm not seeing exactly what you showed, but I've only tried it so far on an iPad.

I am suspicious about you having an RGB-32 (HDR) document that you're exporting to PNG, though. RGB-32 PNG files are rare, I think, and the support for them in the Affinity applications is very new.

How did you start with RGB-32 in the first place? It seems like an odd choice.

I love graphic design, but as I've clearly demonstrated through this thread - I'm not a computer guy.  I think maybe I chose that document setting because in DrawPlus in order to export an image with a transparent background you had to have 32 bit depth (?), not sure - does that make sense?  Anyway, if anyone will click the wrong box, its' me.  Thanks again for your quick response (you'll probably be hearing from me again)!

24-bit colour depth allows you to use 8 bits for each of three colour channels (R, G, and B). 32 bits per pixel gives you 8 bits for the alpha channel, allowing graduated transparency.

But that's still done with RGB-8 color format (8 bits for R, 8 for G, 8 for B, and 8 for A), not RGB-32 (32 bits for R, 32 for G, 32 for B, and 32 for A).

32-bit depth is 32 bits for the entire color information of one pixel, while RGB-32 is 32 bits for one color component, i.e. a total of 128 bits for the color of one pixel. Just curious, if you change your document to RGB-8, how big will the file be?

I think I must have misreported the file size of my whole document that I first referenced to Walt (I said the whole file was 32GB), but now when I convert from the RGB-8 and the 32 HDR setting, the file size for the whole drawing goes from 8MB (RGB-8) to 17MB (32 HDR) - still that's a sizable difference and I will check all of my docs to make sure they are on RGB-8 - good education!
