Sludgefest
I have used Paint Shop Pro and have the ability to Select a part of a photo or image then cut (or copy) and paste it to a totally brand new document (they call it image). I am unable to do this easily within Affinity Photo. I have to jump through hoops to make this happen. This is a task I do often and so it would be handy to create a new document simply by copying or cutting and pasting to a brand new document. 😀
walt.farrell
Select what you want, and Copy, then File > New from Clipboard if you want it in a new document. Sludgefest
Maybe I should rephrase my initial posted request: I would like to cut or copy a (selected - marching ants) piece of an existing document and use this to create a totally brand new project/file that I must now name. At present this cannot be done. I can cut or copy and paste to another existing document but I am unable to create an entirely new project/file with this piece that came from another larger project. 🙄 Pšenda

Gripsholm Lion
Perhaps there is something in this request which we are all missing because it has not been made explicit to us. @Sludgefest could you tell us what you think is missing from the "New from Clipboard" function? Return
Just one caveat is that it will not open the original dpi but will use 72 dpi on mac and 96 dpi on windows. Copy/pasting to an already opened document will honor the dpi set in that document though. Gripsholm Lion 1 Quote

In the case of a general image source - for example PrintScreen, it's fine (at least on Win), but if the copy is done from Affinity, it's a real shame that it's not including the DPI value.
