Saving and importing effects

Recommended Posts

I have made text with particular effects which I want to apply to more text.  How does one save a set of effects and then import them to apply to the new text?  At the moment, it seems as if I am going to have to write all the effects out and apply them to each individual lot of new text, but surely I am missing something?

Your options may vary with the used app and effect layer types. For instance if applied as layer effects you may copy the object selected with the Move Tool and then select the target object and choose "Paste FX". Note that the option "Scale with object" in the Layer Effects Panel influences the result pasted for another object.

In case the FX are separate layers ("Live Effects") you can copy these layers and place them accordingly to you target text object. Or just use them for both text frames with the according layer hierarchy.

First of all you have to tell for which apps and what sort of text (aka Artistic Text, or mass Frame Text) effects. - So if for smaller Artistic Text where reusability Styles (as Walt suggested) are the way to go, as Styles (for the Styles Panel here) can also imply any applied FX effect setups. - For bigger page wise frame text portions, like things used in APub, there are other paragraph style methods to set these up.

What object did you copy to the clipboard immediately before using Paste FX?

I assume there is no "wrong FX". Means, copied effects get pasted + not copied effects do not get applied.

Maybe certain parameters of certain effects differ between copied and pasted?

Thanks to all for your guidance.  Being a numpty, I was expecting somehow to save FX settings which would be identifiable, importing them as required.  I had not realised that by copying a section of text, one could then import (or rather paste) just the effects.  I now understand.

There are ways and means that are obvious to those who are familiar, but not to those of us who are less familiar with the software.  The 'Help' pages sometimes assume the user has greater knowledge, skill or experience than is the reality.

You need to distinguish between "Layer FX" and "Live Effects": while the first are properties of 1 object (its layer) the latter are separate layers, additionally to the affected object. Though there is no "save effect" option you can store such settings / objects / layers in the Styles panel respectively the Assets panel for repeated use at any later time. Styles and Assets may get exported + imported but usually remain available for every document once they were created ("saved").
