Callout: Rounded rectangle tool bug

Recommended Posts

In Publisher 2.1.1 make a rounded rectangle callout. One of the options is for tail height. But when you adjust it the vertical size of the box changes instead. The tail height does change, but so does the height of the box. Only way to adjust the tail height and keep the same size of box is to convert it to curves.

Maybe not a big deal unless you are using it a lot.

... or if you want to achieve a certain setup. For frequent or particular use it appears to be more efficient to work with separate objects, possibly nested.

The CallOut Shapes aren't as comfortable as possibly expected, especially if you want to use them as text frame, too. The limitations, for instance of its tail direction or vertical text alignment, were discussed a few times, e.g. …

FWIW, it is the same for the Callout Ellipse Tool. So basically, not a bug per se, just an annoying lack of a parametric option to adjust only the tail height of either callout type.

Personally I would do that either way in order to have overall more flexibility for custom needs here. I also would make myself some own reusable callout assets, for such stuff I personally mostly have a need for.

I know about making my own assets. I have dozens right now for this project I am working on.

Yesterday morning I decided to use the callout symbol or whatever you call it (I'm sure someone will correct me) and see if it had some adjustments that would make it a bit quicker. That is when I noticed that the tail height option does not work as expected. I only reported it as a bug - a tiny issue. I was stunned at the response from the team. Maybe that's why Publisher, at least, has so many bugs. One of them destroyed the layout of 40 plus pages - again -  later on yesterday. It took 2 hours to put everything back the way it was considering I endured 3 crashes while doing it. I am considering making a file to show that this happens. I wonder if taking the time to do that will matter to the Serif team.
