Shape won't sit beneath Text layer

Recommended Posts

So I'm trying to do a pretty simple procedure (or so I thought). I have this mountain shape that I would love to sit behind the text, but nothing is working. I've tried adjusting the layer up and down, changing the passthrough function, and even playing with masking, even though it's not what I wanted.

Any thoughts on what I might have done to keep the shape sitting on top?

Thanks for the help!

Hi @MiiPalooza,
Welcome to the Affinity Forums!

The "Passthrough" info is insufficient here. It just says different blend modes in its nested layers get respected + transferred. Quite likely there is a child layer inside "ExploringT3" with a different blend mode, i.e. "Darken" for the right text frame in this example:

You have black on the Text overtop black on the graphic. Try having a different colour for the text or the graphic.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

I don’t think Blend Modes, other than Normal, need to be used here as far as I can tell from the screenshot.

If the Blend Mode of both the “ExploringT3” layer and the mountain layer are set back to Normal then the mountain should show behind the text, as long as the “ExploringT3” layer doesn’t have something ‘odd’ in it (which we can’t see in the screenshot), and the mountain layer is below that layer in the stack.

If that doesn’t work then we need to know what the “ExploringT3” layer is made of - a screenshot showing the expanded "ExploringT3" layer would be useful.

Even better, a sample .afdesign document so we can see all the details would help.

Yeah, not sure how passthrough was selected. Changed all to normal.
I was thinking it may be ExploringIT3 layer as well. Expanded it and cleaned up the weird groupings.

I did discover that the "Exploring" & "Solutions" are Artistic Text Tools, while "I.T." is a Frame Text Tool. I think I did this because the period (.) wasn't working with this particular font type. I don't think this is the issue, though. All text is still sitting behind the Curve (mountain).

@Old Bruce, isn't the text rather dark gray – versus black of the shape – and thus should appear as visible texture?

I didn't think the text color should be an issue either, but apparently that was the cause... Can anyone explain why the grey text wouldn't just sit on top?

I checked your file again and you have Black text with transparency. Choose Grey colour at 100% Opacity. Note that I had to change the font to one I have on my machine.
