Nashorn
I have taken text from a website. If I copy it in front of a dark background, the black text appears in a white field. How can I remove the white background? The publisher shows me no setting for this.

If it is text then you should look at the Character Panel for the Background Colour. and with clear background Quote Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6 Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear. R C-R
Assuming this is actually a text layer & not a bitmap, & if Bruce's suggestion does not work, if you don't already have it open, you can try using Window > Text > Text Frame to open the APub Text Frame panel, & with the text layer selected, in that panel set the Fill: color to none (click on the small white circle with the red slash through it). This will remove any color from the frame of the text.
