Clip canvas Not cliping

Operating System: Windows 11

Recreating:

1. Use Elipse tool

2. Make it an Oval

3. Mask an image using it

4. turn the oval arround ( Not 90, 180, 270, 360 )

5. turn image arround ( Not 90, 180, 270, 360 )

5. clip canvas

I then Proceded to try a way arround of moving Elipse out to the surface and hiding the original image which i thought it would then slip the canvas to the Elipse but instead it Cliped it to the hidden image Layer.

Sorry, but I do not understand what you intended. Your ellipse is sitting on the canvas (no "clipping") involved, and your image is hidden.

Thanks for the clarification. I think the canvas is always rectangular.

It's not a bug. It's by design. Clip canvas command always clips to the object size, not to the visible pixels. Even all pixels are hidden from the canvas, it still clips to objects' size.

BTW, there is really a bug about clipping canvas command. If you have any live filter/adjustment layer not masking to any layers, the clip canvas command can't clip anything. If you mask it back on a layer/group, then the clipping canvas works again.

Hi @Ezbaze,

As Karl has mentioned, this is the intended behaviour when clipping a document with hidden pixels - if you wish for the canvas to clip to the exact size of the masking object, please right-click on the layer and select 'Rasterise and Trim'.

This will convert the masked layer to a Pixel layer, with a new bounding box - meaning the 'Clip Canvas' command will now reduce the document to the size of the visible pixels only.

It seems it's possible now with v2.1 beta's crop tool improvements 

If I understand it correctly, you can pixel selection your ellipse then use crop tool to clip the canvas.

Alternatively, you can use Layer->geometry->add to convert the ellipse to a curve, with a new non-rotated bounding box. Clip Canvas will then come close to this curve. Unfortunately, other unfixed bugs may lead to some extra pixels still added around the bounding box.

Another hint: the Beta 2.1 already has crop to selection in the pipeline. 

 

A number of improvements have been made to the crop tool based on customer feedback:

  • Crop to selection. If you have a pixel selection active the crop tool will now initiate to be a min fit around the selection you have.

I tried this and turns out that when you convert the Elipse into a new curve it actually keeps the rotation ( I can see this being very usefull for other things though ) so unfortunetly this wouldn't work, and weirdly enough after doing that the Clip Canvas no longer honors the bounding box of the new curve:

You may have missed the most important step: Geometry->add (with a single layer) removes the rotation.

@EzbazeThe keyword is "Add". You don't have to convert the ellipse to a curve. After "Layer->Geometry->Add", the ellipse will convert to a curve by itself and the bounding box will reset the rotation to 0 degree. Of course, by doing this you will no longer be able to edit the ellipse as a geometric shape.
