I have to exit the project where I can then save the work, then back into the project to continue.

Its much more useful to tap Documents -> Save so you can progressively save your work.

And I notice on the Live Docs display, there is a redundancy. The hamburger has Save option and Save as, which should be in the working document Hamburger, because  a swipe left on the Live docs image also gives the Save option.

Yes, agree completely with having the Save/Save As within an Opened Document. Though only a few taps…is still time consumed from workflow.

I do not mind the new Left Swipe and the Hamburger Save/Save As redundancy, probably up to personal preference ….it just seems like there could have been more options associated in each.

Agreed, but all live documents are actually ‘in filing system language’, held  ‘open’ until deleted, just like desktop tabs.

I’m not concerned with the technical details. I just want to be able to Save as I work. Don’t want to close, just save and continue working.

Agreed, just like the desktop apps, save and save as also need to be accessed from the document/file menu iPad/desktop.

But it if that is done, the Saved vs UnSaved status should also be synchronized between the document view and Live Docs. If you Save from the document, and immediately switch to Live Docs, it should not say Modified.

Agreed, to be honest, if they just synchronised to work like the desktop the only option on the home page would be close, just like tabs on the desktop. This would hopefully encourage people to not use the app as a storage location for all their work.

Definitely not. That is a recipe for disaster. The user's external file must be saved only when the user asks for it. Anything automatic needs to save someplace else, with a different name, and maybe a versioned name.
