Clipping or masking layer to another

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This is my first time playing with AD and I can't figure out how to solve this.

Basically I have an area of one layer that I need to be under another but this layer is actually further down in the layers panel.

I'm trying to create something like the aperture of a camera lens.

I've attached a screenshot of what I'm after with the red being the part I want to be hidden by the lower layer.  As you can see I need this layer ordering to remain and cant figure out how to clip or mask properly.

I got close to what I wanted using subtract to change the shape of blade 9 but then the stroke doubled up and didn't look right.

Sorry if thats not very clear.

Jonny

I just came across this tutorial on the forum. https://youtu.be/fL-yjha3qDA

So you may be able to use some of the same concepts. Making a duplicate, and using divide to get the missing section you need to overlap without changing your layer order.

Thanks, I've tried using both divide and subtract but because I'm using stroke on the shapes it doesnt really work that well for me.

Could it be a stroke alignment issue as well? Have you already tried to set the stroke alignment to “Center” with your subtract method? Does that make any difference?

Yay that sorts it.  So the subtraction and then all strokes set to center.

Thanks all for the replies

Yes and no... it's not so simple to "invert".

I would just redraw the clipping shape to cover the other side :) .

On a technical level, to answer your question....

At this time there is no Invert mask button, but you can make your own. It's a multistep process that I could outline but it's kind of unnecessary....

Because.... if you want to use exactly the shapes you have now, instead of clipping, Group to two and give the shape you were trying to use as a clip a Blending setting of Erase.

Center with erase option.afdesign
