"Add to Selection" for Objects

Is it possible to Add, Subtract or Intersect with an existing Object Selection in Designer ?

Currently, holding "Shift" allows me to add new objects, but if select objects already in the existing selection they are removed.

Add and Subtract are already available for pixel selections, but not Intersect.

Hi @broaddus and welcome!

 

With more than one vector object selected and the Move tool active, pull down the Layers menu, choose Geometry and then one of the options;

 

 

These commands are also available via the contextual toolbar:

Actually, I don't want to merge/combine the objects. I just want to select them.

Either select them directly on/via the drawing area, or even more accurate via the Layers panel. Selecting and highlighting the related object layers on the layers panel (use the move tool when selecting) will select exactly those objects on screen then.

I think I see what you're saying @broaddus

In the video below, if I start with the triangle selected, and then hold down the shift key and drag round the square and the ellipse, the selection handles on the triangle disappear, making it seem to be deselected.

 

 

In fact, if you watch the highlighted selection in my Layers Panel, the triangle remains selected, and when I release my mouse all three objects are highlighted in the panel, and thus all are selected.

But I'm still not absolutely sure if that's what you mean. For precise selections, it may be easier to shift-click on each object in the Layers Panel.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Here in this video I perform one normal selection of multiple objects followed by a Shift+Drag selection.

You can see on the 2nd selection that the initial objects are unselected, which makes it hard to Add to an existing selection.

I would say this is by design. We just have to be careful when making selections.

In Preferences - Tools, uncheck "Select object when intersects with selection marquee". This will mean that objects are only selected when they are fully surrounded by the marquee. Then you can drag the marquee half-way over the previously selected objects and they won't be selected:

(Although personally I would just drag round the whole lot in one go...)

I can see and play both in Safari (macOS 12.3.1 Monterey) but not if I open the page in Chrome or Opera. After supper I'll try to convert them to .mp4 and see if it makes any difference.

The forum seems to be doing something odd to these videos. I downsampled the second one to 480p and uploaded it in a new post, which was immediately (and apparently automatically) deleted. I can see and play the first two in my attachments, under my forum profile. The third, downsized, version is listed as 'not available'. I'll try again in a further post.

Weird. Now I can see & play it. Two hours ago it just showed the black rectangle & slashed Play icon. So the forum does seem to be doing something weird to some videos, perhaps only if they are *.mov files?
