dyslok.pl Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Hi, I've encountered a problem with editing Adobe-generated PDFs with gradient surfaces. When I import the PDF into Photo, the gradient doesn't show. However when I create a new document and drag the PDF onto the canvas as embedded document, the gradient is there. Other software doesn't seem to have any problem with rendering the gradient. Recorded on Win 7. gradient import problem.mov Quote
Dan C Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Hi @dyslok.pl, Thanks for your report! 3 hours ago, dyslok.pl said: However when I create a new document and drag the PDF onto the canvas as embedded document, the gradient is there. When placing the file this way, the PDF is placed in a 'passthrough' mode, which means Affinity doesn't interpret the PDF file, whereas when using File > Open the PDF is converted to an Affinity document and unsupported properties may be lost - Could you please provide a copy of the PDF file in question? Is this a mesh gradient used in Adobe? Quote

What are other unsupported properties? Is this gradient something non-compliant with PDF standard and Adobe-specific? I just assumed that if some generic software (Foxit Reader) is able to visualise that object, then it will be available via Affinity, at least as non-editable raster yet still separable from the text and other elements. Maybe worth considering Attaching the PDF file in question. Postscriptum. Same thing on Mac. Thanks! Plakat.pdf Quote

Sometimes helpful, sometimes not. Even Inkscape struggles on your PDF, the internal library shows coloured triangles, the external library rasterises the gradient mesh. In Acrobat the gradient is called Shading Type 4: Free-Form Gouraud-Shaded Triangle Meshes. Perhaps the Affinities will someday support thoses meshes? Difficult for Serif I guess, because Adobe as a market leader won't share its technology for free. Dan C Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Many thanks for providing this! As Joachim has confirmed, this PDF is using a Mesh Gradient which unfortunately the Affinity apps cannot support currently, my apologies. We hope to improve our support of these elements in the future, so I'll be sure to add a 'vote' to this feature for you now Quote
MichaelR. Posted April 21, 2022 Posted April 21, 2022 How/Where can I vote for a specific feature? I'd also like to vote for Mesh Gradient support... As this feature is part of PDF standard and even public domain tools like Inkscape support it, I hope that support comes in the near future!? Quote
