Why isn't the divide tool working for me?

It’s because the Boolean operations (‘Divide’ in particular) have been somewhat broken for a long time. A simple but tedious way to achieve the desired result is to duplicate the two original shapes, use ‘Intersect’ to isolate the overlap, and then subtract a copy of the overlap piece individually from each of the shapes you started with.

Hm... interesting. That seems... kind of insane that something like that has gone for 'a long time' and still hasn't been fixed.

I'm trying to avoid using Illustrator, but stuff like this makes it difficult to support Affinity Designer. I guess they already have my money though.

I've recreated the issue, as I ended up using Albert's fix originally. This is to show that it's a curve.
