JohnZeman Posted August 19, 2021 Posted August 19, 2021 It's been my understanding that locking a layer in Affinity Photo should prevent that layer from being modified. However using the current version 1.10 locking a layer does not seem to do anything at all, I can still make changes to it. Am I missing something? Quote

Sorry, but your understanding is not correct. Locking prevents two very specific things, as mentioned in the Help: Quote Locking is useful when you need to prevent a layer from being moved or transformed unintentionally. Editing of layer content is still possible. If you search the forums you'll find many discussions and complaints about this, and requests for application changes. I think, it would be cool if it would be a little bit like in GIMP, where you can lock the pixels from colour manipulations, lock the layer against transformations and lock the alpha channel - separately from each other. Of course there are many other things missing in GIMP that AfPhoto has, but these lock-functions are nice. Might be a case for the Suggestions. Edit: As an additional annotation I have to say that even GIMP hasn't any lock-functions for years, as far as I remember. Quote
JohnZeman Posted August 19, 2021 Author Posted August 19, 2021 Thank you Walt, the help page you sent a link to does indeed state what you just said. However the help page that came up when I pressed F1 on my keyboard opened the local help page which does not say a locked layer can still be edited (see attached screenshot). Apparently the help pages I've been using are out of date. Anyway, thanks again now I understand. Quote

I see that, too. Evidently the online Help is not quite the same as the in-program help (at least the Windows version). Perhaps a Mac user (unless you are one) will let us know what they see. The local help page looks the same on my Mac as it does in the posted screenshot. The only difference is trivial: the To unlock all layers: section has a reveal triangle to show or hide the "From the Layer menu, select Unlock All" text. walt.farrell 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.6 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7
