I run two machines each using the same model GPU, a GTX 960, Windows 10, and ASUS Z97 Mobo.
Both have 32GB of RAM and plenty of available disc space.
I have available RAM set the maximum for the programme.

On my main machine I have had a couple of instances of Publisher not behaving as it should.
I have solved this by uninstalling and then reinstalling.
Now for some reason, I am unable to completely uninstall Affinity from my system ?

Recently Publisher has been freezing up Big Time. Once again I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but the benefits were short lived until the problem started all over again.
After uninstalling, I now find that I am able to reinstall without entering my licence keys ?

I have "Gathered" my Publisher project and transferred it to my second, back up machine, and all seems to be OK.

These problems do not seem to be affecting any other programmes, and only occur on one machine.
The file that I am working on at present is 133 MB in size, and has just under 200 pages.
Does Affinity Publisher have any upper file size limit ?

How do I clear Affinity entirely from my system, so that I can do a completely fresh install ?
Just going through the usual uninstall procedure, no longer seems to do the job thoroughly.

That's correct, the location where the licence file is stored doesn't get cleared BUT all other settings are.  This was mainly to save users having to enter a product key when reinstalling the app on the same PC.  But the reply from @Alfredshould uninstall everything related to Affinity :)

Do both machines have the same driver levels for the graphics cards?

Do both have the same Windows virtual memory settings? The same kind of internal disk drives, especially for the C drive (or wherever you have the Windows Swap file allocated?)

Is the other software that is installed the same between both systems? And is the software that is running while Publisher is running the same?

And, though I hate to suggest it, some users have found that a fresh Windows install has fixed issues in their Affinity applications. The way that Windows updates happen, and perhaps especially driver updates, can cause problems that are hard to diagnose and fix using any other approach.

You might also consider a couple of diagnostic approaches if you haven't tried them already:

  • While the program is hanging, use the Task Manager to take a dump, and provide that to Serif for diagnosis.
    or
  • Microsoft supplies the SysInternals toolset, which includes procmon. Perhaps installing that and using it to monitor Publisher would provide some useful information. I have noticed a few topics here that have mentioned that and given some instructions, so a forum search for procmon might help you.

Also, the 1.9.4 (now 1.10.0) beta is doing a lot of performance work. You could test it see if it behaves better for you.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, my two machines are very similar, almost the same.
I run two machines each using the same model GPU, a GTX 960, Windows 10, and ASUS Z97 Mobo.
Both have 32GB of RAM and plenty of available disc space.
I have available RAM set to the maximum for the programme.
There is a slight variation in the programmes loaded.

What I noticed on my number 1 machine, was that the benefits of doing a reinstall gradually lasted for a shorter and shorter period, before it had to be done again.
It never did last very long ?

It's like something is piling up/clogging up in the background, until it seizes up ??

BUT !
Today, the freezing up problem started on the second machine !!

It looks to me as though there is some sort of Project/Memory/Resource limitation affecting the performance.
I am going to do a smaller project in Publisher of 20 pages or so, and if all goes OK I will import it into the main publication.

I will keep you informed.

I am not happy with testing a Beta version of anything.
That would require a completely different 3rd machine.

Thank you again.

The beta versions are completely separate programs, and install without changing the retail version in any way. You can run whichever you want, or run both of them at the same time, even.

I still feel chicken !!

I checked with Task Manager as you suggested although I don't understand what to take a dump means ?
Not in this context anyway.

But I did notice that when making any adjustments to my document the RAM/CPU usage would briefly shoot up to 100%
So I have changed the programme setting for RAM usage.
Perhaps I am momentarily starving other stuff in the background, needed to keep going.

I also noticed on my first look at Task Manager, Publisher appeared to be showing it was open X 2 ??

For the present, I will get on with my smaller 20 page project, with the reduced RAM allocation.

This shows taking a dump for Photo, but it would work the same for Publisher:

Many of us have and run both the beta and the retail version. Just make sure you don't work on your production files with the beta (but it will warn you if you try).
