Affinity Photo crash when exporting TGA

Hi @Steve Isaacs - welcome to the Affinity Forums.

This is not happening for me - is this happening for you with the same file or can it happen with a blank document?

It sounds like you aren't even getting as far as choosing a location to save the image but where is the source image being loaded from?

Do you have any crash reports in:

Affinity Store version - Go to %AppData%\Affinity\Photo\1.0\CrashReports\reports

Microsoft Store version - Go to %AppData%\Affinity\Photo\1.0 (Store)\CrashReports\reports

You can acccess the AppData folder by pressing the Windows key + R on your keyboard and then just type %AppData%

Hi Steve,

After some poking, the issue could be related to your graphics drivers.

What graphics card and driver version are you using? I'd recommend making sure you have the latest drivers installed—especially now that we are using OpenCL in 1.9

As a quick test, you can try disabling OpenCL first from Preferences > Performance.

HI,

I have an NVidia 1660 Super and the drivers were recently updated. OpenCL was disabled. When I try to enable I get a complaint (ability to cut and paste a dialog box would be helpful):

Hardware Acceleration requires Windows 10.0.19042 (May 2020) or newer and a modern GPU.
Your current operating system is Microsoft Windows 10 (version 10.0.18362).

I could swear I've been keeping up with all the updates but with 6 computers and only me it's hard to keep up. My days can be spent updating rather than getting anything done (end of rant).

Steve

Your Windows version is from September 2019 and therefore no longer current enough to use OpenCL.

To Update go to: MediaCreation Tool

AMD Ryzen 7 5700X | INTEL Arc A770 LE 16 GB  | 32 GB DDR4 3200MHz | Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (26100.1742)

Affinity Suite V 2.5.5 & Beta 2.(latest)

I tried updating Windows and the updater fails. Attempts to repair were unsuccessful. I'm now attempting to update to 20H2.

I installed on another PC which has 2004 installed and this works with no problem and OpenCL is enabled with an on board GPU Intel HD Graphics 530.

This apparently is the result of a broken Windows update. The Windows troubleshooter made me think it fixed the update problem when in fact it didn't.

I'll tell you a secret. I'm a Linux user and expert but Windows neophyte. I use Windows only for gaming, photography and, video only because that's where the good tools (like Affinity) are available. I shy away from Windows largely because updates have often broken for me resulting in a huge loss of time -- like now. A Windows PC for me is fine for about a year and then often starts failing updates and gradually loses performance because of cruft. A fresh install of Windows doesn't cut it for me because of the having to re-install all the apps. Any chance at all there will be an Affinity for Linux?

Please follow the steps below!

Repair with the DISM commands in the command prompt

Windows 10 in running mode can be checked and also repaired with the help of the command prompt (cmd.exe) and the DISM commands.

And this is how it works:

Enter Command Prompt or cmd.exe in the taskbar search and start it by right-clicking "As administrator" or by holding down Ctrl + Shift.
C:\Windows\system32\ appears.

Check if there are errors in the registry:
Copy Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth by right-clicking and paste into the prompt by right-clicking.
Scan data sets (partition) for errors
Copy Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth with a right-click and paste it into the command prompt with a right-click.
Scan Windows 10 for errors using Windows Update and have it repaired:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
If you have carried out the repair with Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, you can run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth again for safety's sake.

Hi Steve, does it crash if you go and disable OpenCL again? 😵

If it does - that's worrying. If it doesn't, I can only assume that updating Windows generally sorted all sorts of crazy out.

Still works with OpenCL disabled. Yes, updating Windows to 20H2 seems to have corrected whatever the underlying problem was. I assume that the offending files were replaced by the update.

It is possible that .NET was the problem. It was also updated. I suspect this because of the immediate crash when clicking the TGA tab. I'm thinking that there was something about a widget used for the popup which should have been displayed.

btw: I'm very impressed by the responsiveness of your team. You are all fantastic. In my mind Serif and Affinity wins!
