New pattern layer from selection" on ipad. Where is it?

Recommended Posts

I'm having a really hard time finding the new 1.9 features on the iPad version of affinity photo, particularly the "new pattern layer from selection" option. Im trying to import an image and turn it into a pattern but I can't find this option and I can't get the regular pattern layer to work with my imported raster image

It’s a feature not available on the iPad yet and due to a bug in the macro recorder on the desktop for this feature I haven’t been able to do my normal trick of recording this step and using on the iPad version the way I added TextOnCurve and other features to the iPad in my Mud’s Macros library.

I don't recall seeing any posts about that. What's the bug?

I just spotted it, I tried to record the New Pattern Layer From Selection as a single item macro. It records ok but if you try to use it by firstly making a pixel selection then running the macro on the desktop, it creates a pattern, but its not the current selection. Seems to be a previous selection so clearly a bug.

Thanks. If it's like other macro processing, there's a possibility that the selection content is captured and embedded in the macro during recording. That happens with Copy/Paste, if I remember correctly.

Actually this isn’t as much as problem as it first appears, here is the workaround:-

1. Create your shape or import the image that you want to duplicate the pattern from, for ease of use here I just use a shape from the shapes studio but any image or shape layer will do.

2. From layers studio select New Pattern Layer, just accept the default parameters as they are unimportant. EDIT: Actually it is, if it is a very detailed pattern pick a larger size eg 500x500.

3. Move the pattern layer selection box over the area you want to create the pattern from, use the resize handles and snapping if needed as you desire.

4. Move the pattern layer below the shape or image layer

5. As James Ritson does in his demo video, use Merge Down and Bob’s your Uncle, pattern created !

Realised default bitmap size is important.

It's not clear to me @Sani, that this new feature is across all platforms (iPad + Desktop). Not all of the features are .. I think.

I've found a reference (see illustration), but it's not clear it's both iPad and Desktop as it's in a bit of a mop-up piece at the bottom of the page. The iPad versions are lagging behind the Desktop versions.

Words are crude implements, difficult to get perfect, easy to get tied in knots with, and often - usually - misunderstood, which is why 'tolarence' is the best word of all.

The word "professional" fits us all - amateur, semi-pro, beginner, advanced, middle, beyond it all, and on....., because professionals are tolerant.

See my workaround it provides sufficient functionality to not be an issue on the iPad.
