Currently I am going through all the features of APu one by one, well I am trying to. On my way I stumbled upon the "Name" and "Global" feature of Bullets and Numbering.

    1. The Name setting lets you name your new list format and set it as a global format which can be used across the document, while the Style setting allows you to associate your list formatting with an existing text style for future use.

But how can this be used? Does anyone has a sample document to look at and learn?

Hello together,

can anyone really explain what needs to be set in order to be able to continue numbering across several text frames? Sometimes the setting "global" helps, sometimes it doesn't. This is exactly what is not described in the video demo mentioned above. It is a basic requirement to have numbering across a complete document, e.g. for chapter headings.

This fact is also not described in the help, at least not in the German. It always takes me a lot of time to do that and every time it's a coincidence.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards

Rainer

I need the same functionality, that is to be able to set numbered image captions across different text boxes where the numbering updates itself when new captions are inserted at different locations in the document. I can then use the table of contents feature successfully to produce a table of figures.

It seems to be difficult to get a clear explanation of the 'global' feature under numbering and like RainerH said it sometimes works and other doesn't, which is bizarre. 🤔

Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

See the Paragraphs: Bullets, numbers and initial words video at around the 2min mark.

Name and Global are not explained in this video. Perhaps someone has a sample document to show how to use these features?

Same request here. This global bullet function is not described properly, I'm not able to use it.

I need it to number all the figures across the document.

Could anyone update this answer?

Thanks, Alex (using Publisher 2.6.0)

Hi Alex and welcome to the forums.

The trick is to set the list to Global, give it a name, set Restart Numbering to Manual Only, and deselect Restart Numbering Now. If want more detail, look for "To create a running list" in my free Publisher manual (page 172 of the 2.6 edition). You can download the manual as a PDF from this forum.
