Alann
Has anyone compared sharpening an image in Affinity Photo versus sharpening the same image in Topaz Labs Sharpen AI?

To be honest and practical I believe that whatever Topaz can do, both affinity and photoshop can do with no difference in quality. There are many different techniques that I have used for sharpening and would never consider a spacialised sharpening software programme to be worth the extra expenditure. This does not mean that the software is no good, I am certain that it can deliver excellent results but I would accept the challenge to sharpen any photo and then compare it with a sharpening software programme.😊 i think these types of software are meant for people who want thier images improved without having to invest time and learning in a photo editing programme, which is understandable. My conclusion is simple, learn the different techniques for sharpening in a dedicated photo editing programme and you will be thoroughly satisfied. Quote Microsoft - Like entering your home and opening the stainless steel kitchen door, with a Popup: 'Do you really want to open this door'? Then looking for the dishwasher and finding it stored in the living room where you have to download a water supply from the app store, then you have to buy microsoft compliant soap, remove the carpet only to be told that it is glued to the floor.. Don't forget to make multiple copies of your front door key and post them to all who demand access to all the doors inside your home including the windows and outside shed. Apple - Like entering your home and opening the oak framed Kitchen door and finding the dishwasher right in front you ready to be switched on, soap supplied, and water that comes through a water softener. Ah the front door key is yours and it only needs to open the front door.
Alann
That is my thoughts! I was just wondering if anyone has actually compared the two.
firstdefence
As a short test, I used this image to see the results of sharpening with Topaz Ai, the settings are S = Sharpening, N = Noise Suppression and G = Add Grain - all will max out at 100 So on Auto Topaz did S=13 N=7 G=0 and the result was... This is Topaz manually set to S=100 N=7 G=0 This is Affinity Photo and Unsharp Mask. Alann
Thanks Firstdefence, for doing the comparison. They look the same to me! Do you agree?
firstdefence
There is very little difference and while the Auto mode in Topaz is a bit conservative, I think as Chris26 as pointed out, you can achieve similar results from Affinity Photos filters. If the difference had been more identifiable it may have justified the cost but as it is I’d agree with Chris and save your money.
