keeping track of the layers is challenging though

Have you tried naming them to see if that helps?

Yeah! But try keeping track of a few hundred named layers. Generally I group them into sections, like "Engine," "Hull," "Topwing," "Wing 1! etc. Then undergroups for instance- Engine- cowling- sidepanels- cylinders. and so on and so on. Then under under groups, engine- cowling- rivets.

You can keep track until you want to insert a new layer between layers in a grouped group. Then things get hairy.

I fully understand that issue...I resorted to stacked embedded files... or nested layers to get around the dilemma...
