catlover Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 I've been trying to create a style, to no avail I'm sad to say. I know I'm doing something wrong, but can't figure out what. I've tried "create from selection", tried to export to png (no background) and then import that file as style, in short, I've tried every which way, including "new category etc.etc." but I just can't get it to work. What I need is to create a style from just the harlequin pattern, without the background. Could someone please shed a light on this ? By which I mean: step by step ? Thanks in advance, C.L. harlequin.afdesign Quote
walt.farrell Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 A Style captures the fill and stroke of an object. You have a group of objects, which you could turn into an Asset. But that group of objects has a variety of fills and (potentially) strokes. So, you could select each individual object and create a style from it. But I don't think it makes any sense to create a single style from the group, because there's no one fill or stroke to capture and apply later. walt.farrell Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 On the other hand, you could do this: Make that harlequin pattern bigger. I enlarged it to 2057px square. Export it as a PNG file. I used Selection without background: harlequin.zip Create a shape such as a rectangle. Select the Fill Tool, and change the Fill Type in the Context Toolbar to Bitmap. Select the PNG file. At that point you have a rectangle filled with the harlequin bitmap pattern. In the Style panel, use the hamburger menu and choose Add Style from Selection. You now have a harlequin style you can apply to other objects. G13RL Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Export your drawing as png (selection without background). Then "Place" the png file in your afdesign file, "Convert to Curves". You can then create the style. jmwellborn 1 Quote
catlover Posted March 18, 2020 Author Posted March 18, 2020 Thank you both very much for your help. I'm going to try your suggestions. Just one more question regarding styles : I also went the "Edit > Create Style" route. Both prior to creating a drawing, so beginning with file>new>edit>create style>draw the pattern>export as png - as well as file>new>draw the pattern>edit>create Style. The result was nil. And I can't find anything in Help about this either. Any suggestions on how to use the "Create Style" menu item ?? Thanks and KEEP SAFE !! C.L. Quote

If you have an object selected, and it is one from which a Style can be created, and that Style does not already exist in the current category in the Styles panel, then Edit > Create Style will create a Style from it. catlover Posted March 18, 2020 Author Posted March 18, 2020 Aha, got it, thank you. It seems really messed things up right from the beginning. I'm going to have another go at it with your suggestions. C.L. Quote
