[New 1.2] Free Vector Tools for Windows 10 Users
sleekdigital replied to GarryP's topic in Resources
This looks pretty cool! Seems like something that could be a really interesting open source project. Just something to consider. -
Background from mask is visible as 1px outline
sleekdigital replied to meefox's topic in V1 Bugs found on macOS
Hopefully this screenshot can make the idea more clear. The Clipping layer is the one on the left, the Masking on the right. Notice the Masking doesn't have the red outline around the dark area. The downside is that you need an extra shape for the background color (in this case a red rectangle.) -

The workaround I have been using for this (at least I think this is the same use case) is to use the shape as a layer mask instead of clipping. Its not as versatile, but it can be a useful work around. -
Vector/pattern fill
sleekdigital replied to jc4d's topic in Feedback for Affinity Designer V1 on Desktop
I am intrigued by this software, but why is there so little information out there about it? I know it is pretty new, but if it was really good I would expect to see more content on you tube and other places about it. -
This can be a useful technique, but it is very different from how freeform gradients work in illustrator. The colors at each point do not interact with each other in the same way as a freeform gradient. I would not say this technique offers "more control" because it isn't directly comparable. As such, I think a real freeform gradient tool would be a very nice feature to add, but I'm not sure I would call it must have.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess this setting has some relevance, but I'm not sure it will help me. I'd rather not have the brush shared between all tools. Mostly I want to be able to determine which brush is currently used by the currently active tool. I guess this option would make it a little easier to keep track, but at the cost of not being able to have a different brush setup for each tool.

OS: Windows 10 Hardware acceleration is ON There are a number of bugs related to indicating the currently selected brush in the Brushes panel. In Pixel Persona, If I have the paint brush tool selected and I select a brush from the brushes panel, there is a blue highlight indicating the brush is selected. If I change to a different brush tool, such as the erase brush tool, the highlight sometimes disappears even if that same brush is selected for that tool. If I scroll the brush panel, the highlight will sometimes reappear and sometimes it won't. When it does it often indicates (with the blue highlight) which brush is selected for the previous tool instead of the currently activated tool. In trying to reproduce this, I found that the above is not consistent, but in general it is not working as expected. It is often impossible to tell which brush is currently in use and sometimes an incorrect brush is highlighted if any brush is highlighted at all.

In AD, I'm noticing some of my imported brushes have an icon on the right side indicating the paint brush or the smear brush. And when that brush is selected it will force the corresponding tool. Brushes without that icon can be used according to which tool is previously selected. How does this work? I could find no mention of it in the documentation. How do you create brushes that pre-select the tool, and is there a way to change existing brushes to not have this behavior?

Oh... I see there is nothing really wrong with the watercolor brush, it was just the result of using it near hard edges. EDIT: Actually the square artifacts seem to be a result of the large size jitter. You have to reduce it quite alot to get it to go away. Still, i'd love to know how to extract textures.
-
Is there any way to extract textures from the brush files? I love the Daub brushes but some of them have errors in the textures. For example the Watercolor blender. At least one of the 3 brush nozzles is creating square artifacts. Its a shame because it would otherwise be a great brush. It would be great if I could extract it, fix it, and replace it.
-
The smear tool is what the Daub Blender brushes use. It seems to me that the smear tool works similar to blending in Photoshop. What I haven't figured out is how you make a brush that defaults to the smear tool instead of the brush tool... maybe it depends on which tool is selected when the brush is created?

Sorry to resurrect this old thread... I was hoping to be able to do this, but no, symbols are not quite enough. I tried setting up a 3x3 grid of symbols. As expected, the paint does not "wrap" when you paint across the symbols. I want this feature soooo bad.

In AD, help with Fx balloon look
sleekdigital replied to jer's topic in Tutorials (Staff and Customer Created Tutorials)
Here is my attempt. I'm not sure if it gets you any closer than the others, but it makes use of a handy trick I found... You can get stronger FX by exploiting the "Scale with object" toggle. Toggle it on and then scale your object much larger than the original. Then toggle it off and scale the object back down to normal size. I did this with the bevel/emboss to get a more rounded look than you could get by applying it directly. Neat huh? heart-balloons-slk.afdesign -
Would be nice if fill tool made it easy to select bitmaps from imported assets instead of always having to browse the hard drive.

Affinity Designer for Windows has launched!
sleekdigital replied to TonyB's topic in News and Information
Its certainly a fair price, but I think what desult means is that Serif Drawplus owners were expecting a special discount rather than the same discount that anyone can get. Its no big deal to me, but I can see why some might feel a little slighted. -

Some folks have already asked about the discount for Serif Draw Plus owners. I'd like to know too. Can someone please respond? -
+1 for seamless tile creation tools! Yeah Krita's wrap around tool is great. https://krita.org/item/new-wraparound-tool/ Also, Serif's own DrawPlus has the Relicate tool. When used precisely, the replicate tool can be useful in creating seamless textures using vector tools. I'm hoping to see an improved version of this tool in AD.
