  1. Editing metadata is so easy to in Adobe Bridge. Especially in tandem with Photoshop. When I moved to Affinity Photo, the lack of a Digital Asset Manager tool became obvious. After much searching and reading various forums, I started using Canon Digital Photo Professional 4 tool (DPP4). I created a work around to edit Matadata/Copyright info as follows:

I bring up my camera raw images in DPP4 to rename and copy to my HD from the SD card.

Next open the camera raw files in Adobe Bridge to edit the Metadata/copyright info.

Then open the raw image(s) in Affinity Photo (AP) for processing and editing.

I'm still working on my workflow in these tools so I hope for some fine tuning of the process. This was so much easier in the Bridge/Photoshop apps. It only points out the real need for an AP DAM product. For many years now AP users have been begging for a DAM product. They've voiced their opinion with money in-hand, to no avail. Instead AP put their resources into AP 2.0. Much to the vast disappointment of their long time customers. I'll now step down from my "soap box". Thank you.

    Affinity Photo:

To the Executives at Serif. Should you choose to search the forums using the title of this post, you'll get at least 20 hits. Some of those hits include statements about a Digital Asset manager (DAM) in development. These requests/discussions go back to 2015. That's 7 YEARS at the time of this writing.

Sooooooo, come on now; what's really going on? Taking 2 covid years out of the timeline still gives you 5 years to respond. Would you not agree that you owe your loyal users a DAM product by now? To the Executive in charge, please give us a release date (some hope). We're getting anxious.

I recently photographed a ribbon cutting. I had 50 images shot in different lighting indoor outdoor, with flash and without. I used a Canon DSLR with a Canon flash and shot in camera RAW. Here is how my post went.

Open stand alone Adobe Bridge (not linked to Photoshop)
Copy 50 RAW files from SD card to “folder-raw”, batch rename, batch edit image “File Info”.
Use Bridge (stand alone version, not within PS) to view image thumbnails.
Select raw files requiring similar edits, open in AP2.
Open single image file in Develop Persona.
Adjust exposure as required (adjustment differs for each image).
    Adjust white balance as required.
    Develop file
Save file to “AP2-Edit” folder, close image
Repeat the above steps for each of the 50 files.
    Open “New Batch Job”
Add 50 images, check “Save Into”, check “Save as JPG”, uncheck “Save as Aphoto”, click OK.

I spent approximately 1-2 hours to complete my post editing using AP2. At this rate I’ll go Broke. I may have to consider giving up using Affinity Photo. Do you now see why some of us are begging for an AP2 compatible DAM? Using Bridge within Photoshop, this work would have been done in 10-15 minutes.

Please, please, please listen to your customers on this issue. Give-A-DAM!

Ive always enjoyed the Affinity Photo Video Tutorials. You do a much better job than A@0&3! When you brought out V2 I updated. Yes, you've added some valuable shortcuts and streamlined tool layout.

For around 5 years your customers have been begging for a DAM product. I was sooooo hoping AP V2 would at least bridge some of that gap. I often shoot in my  studio using the same backdrop, same exposure and same studio light set up. Prior to moving the AP, I would make adjustments across a group of raw image files using something like Bridge. Adjustments like exposure, file info (metadata edits, copyright notice, etc) saturation, white balance and the like. I still don't see anyway to perform these initial camera raw edits to multiple files at once in AP V2.

I've explored the File/New Batch Job tool. Although it allows for the use of Macros, who wants to write a custom macro overtime editing a group of Raw files? What am I missing? Sure appreciate your insights.

Are you saying can’t do in V1?

You must have misread my OP. In V-1 when using the "File/New Batch Job" tool in the Develope Persona you can't apply Basic Presets. The same holds true for V-2. Files have to be Opened in the Develop Persona in order to use Basic/Presets. Very Very Disappointing. Major Disappointment Serif Executives!!!

  5. I just finished processing 7 images from camera raw in the develop persona. As all images were shot using the same exposure/lighting they needed the same basic adjustments. I created/added a preset to adjust exposure, adjust saturation and vibrance. The Image file was opened in the develop persona, applied the basic preset, developed which opened the image in the photo persona, then saved to a new folder. This process had to be applied to 7 files one at a time.

is there a way to apply a basic preset to multiple images in one batch process in the Develop persona? I checked the New Batch Process tool. It only seems to work in the photo persona after developing the raw image.

  6. UPDATE:

As a Canon user, I have access to Canon Digital Photo Professional. I updated it and started looking at it. Turns out with a little exploration, trial and effort, I can accomplish most everything I used in Adobe Bridge and Photoshop. After opening my camera raw images, any edit made to an image file can be applied to all the other images selected. Very handy function. This will make work flow much more efficient. I may have just found my DAM!!

So far I still use the now ancient, perpetual version of LR. It still works for me, well because I haven't updated cameras. I know it does not handle the newer Canon Rs and similar. Don't have one, so it does not affect me.

However like RichardMH, I'm happy to use a third party app, like FastStone, XnViewMP, to quickly look through images to use in AP. Serif seems to almost have their plate overloaded trying to get the bugs out of the apps they already have.

Does either app allow you to batch process images? I.E. select a group of image files, then adjust white balance to all selected images.

Good morning, @hobbytobiz. If you're looking for a full-featured DAM, try out Photo Supreme. ( Link: https://www.idimager.com/home )It is available for Mac and Windows, in Single User and Server configurations. There is also a "Photo Supreme Lite" version, which is free (without any limitations other than a 5,000 photo limit) - an excellent way to evaluate the product.

Photo Supreme is a catalogue (not a photo browser) with probably the best keyword assignment process I've ever come across. It supports rating, geo-location, albums and portfolios (including "smart" albums), versions and stacks, full metadata editing with creation of custom metadata, and so forth. Searching is fairly easy, although it can be crazy complex if you need it to be. Speed is pretty snappy, too.

If you tell the application about Affinity Photo's extension (".afphoto"), it will be able to include AP's files in its catalogues, using the embedded JPG previews for its thumbnails. You can select any photo and (i) locate them on your disk; or (ii) open them in an application of your choosing. In other words, I can choose an Affinity Photo file inside of Photo Supreme, click on a button, and open that photo directly into Affinity for further editing.

It's not free (other than the size-limited "Lite" version) and it has no raw development or editing capabilities to speak of. It can occasionally be a little nerdy, but it is a database at heart so what would you expect? But it is a wonderful standalone catalogue and bears looking at.

Thanks, I may look at Photo Supreme.

The lack of a DAM able to manage properly Affinity's file(s) (beyond the simple thumbnail preview) is frustrating.

I've been using Phase One Media Pro (formerly Microsoft Expression Media and iView Media Pro) for the last 12 years and I'm still pretty happy with it.

Media Pro could be configured to accept new file types but being limited to 4 digit extensions prevents Affinity's files to be imported. Having to rely on multi-layered Tiffs is the only workaround (only for pictures) at the moment, but at the expense of a huge waste of disk space.

Since Phase One discontinued Media Pro a few years ago, my most cherished dream would be that Serif buys it up improving it only where needed, replacing Quick Time functions with a solid integration with Affinity's features and a full support to their proprietary file types. Reviving a robust software with a good reputation could be a good solution for them too if, despite the statements, they haven't been able (or didn't have resources) to develop one from scratch in at least 5 years or more.

I’ve been thinking along the same lines. Affinity should just acquire a DAM, make the necessary tweaks and get it out to the users. I think it was back in 2015 or 2016 there was rumble the product was in the works. Sounds like they are really not committed.

Sounds like the 2 apps you use may not be a good candidate for me to consider.

There are already so many such tools (freeware & commercial for all platforms available), so what should they do different here than hundreds already available such tools (?).

Try digiCam which is free or some of the other tools!

I tried it. Terrible to a 1st time user. After waiting 15 minutes for my file structure to populate, I quit. At that point only a third of the files were loaded.

We’ll, I guess I really screwed up. I was hoping a lot of AP users would agree that Serif needs to market a DAM. Now with all the alternate suggestions they’ll probably figure “No need for a DAM. Our customers have other products to use. No sense releasing a new product.”

    Affinity Photo on MacBook Pro

I'm watching an Affinity Photo video on using "Channels". The video shows the Channels tab. Inside the tab there are Composite options for RG&B, Background options for RG&B and Pixel options for RG&B. When I open the Channels tab in my applications, the Pixel options for RG&B are missing. I only have a single option for "Pixel Selection". Why does my Channels tab not mirror the one in the video???

    UPDATE & SOLUTION:

Below you’ll find a suggestion by “Old Bruce” that solved the problem. Although “control-click” will work with many features/tools in AP, it apparently doesn’t work in the Channels Tab. But the solution by Old Bruce does. His post is embedded below.

    Thanks dude!

You should set the Trackpad in the System Preferences to use a two finger tap to generate a Right Click. There is a known bug with the Control Key used in Channels tab. I found this searching for "Control Channels"

Interestingly enough, I checked and the Secondary Click feature was enabled already in my settings. I wasn’t aware of it or that it was available. Good thing you mentioned it, cause it worked and opened the tool that I needed. Thank you!

I’m going to post the solution to this problem acknowledging your contribution. Thanks again.

In case it's due to the mouse settings as @Old Bruce suggests, for the Apple mouse it's settable ...

    maus_settings.jpg.8e1d43bfd1fb1fb8e82e346c496cac90.jpg

... for other mices it should be too customizable via settings to perform a right click then.

And yes, the Apple mices are pretty unergonomical and not the best choice at all in overall handling!

I'm using a MacBook Pro WITHOUT a mouse. It has a Trakpad. Rt-Click on a trackpad uses the control-click. The control-click works on all other AP menu items EXCEPT for items under the Channels Tab!

Watch the video I highlighted above. All the R, G or B channels and functions shown used in the video DO NOT work in my version of AP. That's the problem I'm trying to resolve.

Did you opened or placed an RGB image, so is it an (image) or (pixel) layer which is selected when you switch over to the channels panel? - In case of an image layer rasterize & select it and retry viewing the channels.

You may want to show a screenshot of your APh workspace with an loaded in image and visable layers- and channels panels.

Yeah, background options still not functioning.
