And in three years, no one has mentioned it again, until now

Little additions like this are easily overlooked unless they make it into one of our job lists, and then there are a lot of big features that are getting our attention.  I'll add it to my to-do list... which is quite long.

Well, I was just going by to see if this feature was somewhere because it's so basic that I couldn't believe a ON/OFF switch for FX didn't exist.

You do realize that the only a few people do take the TIME to register to a forum to do feature request?

So your "no one mentioned it again" is so disrespectful to those doing it...
Feel free to think that nobody wants it, but every designer I see trying Designer ditch it after a few minutes when they see stuff like that is missing...

Going out on a limb here, but .... Serif isn't "sleeping." They're busy, working on fixing bugs, implementing new features, fixing the bugs that inevitably result from introducing new features, etc. What we see on the outside is not in any way, shape or form a reflection of what's happening behind closed doors.

As a side note, you're liable to get a warmer reception to any observations or requests you might make if you couch them in more polite tones.

I use this app since the first betas and have done my fair share of more polite tones. It doesn't happen by itself of spontaneously. It's a result.

So far nothing improved, years passed, features get ignored and dev when they reply ignore the reality of designers and get defensive about the fact that their product managers ask them to do features that are conflicting each others. On top of that, they over market buggy features as production ready.

I am not alone and a lot of threads are complaining about the serif ways of not listening and / or being arrogant / dimissive.

On my side I made my company purchases multiple licenses of affinity on Mac last year and we still never got our final software and are stuck with old versions (1.5) without any roadmap or date to when we will finally get what we paid for.

As a customer, I am just tired to hear the "it's not like that inside" stories. Same crap when Apple release laptops with bad keyboards. Finding excuses. Every. Single. Time.

IDC. We pay for a service and whatever is happening inside doesn't change the result we get. And communication with customers is also the responsability of a company anyway. So if they do a bad job at it, too bad, still their problems.

So please, before judging others, apply your advise to yourself. You don't know the background of ppl posting here.

    Thanks

  3. While Serif is sleeping and providing bugged iOS 11 UI elements, Sketch teamed up with Apple to get the always up-to-date iOS UI Elements and just released a new one for macOS.

When will Serif wake up? We do not know. Until then, Affinity Designer is still not competitive against Photoshop (full UI widgets provided by Apple in PSD but not compatible with Affinity), Sketch or Paintcode which allows you to use your UI straight in your App.

Yup, the tone is a little sarcastic, but those issues have been raised all the time, ignored by the forum staff and Serif. It’s not much to do, but seems that nobody is willing to do the extra step to be competitive again. Sketch is clearly widening the gap with all it’s productivity tools.

  4. Hi,

Following the previous request, one thing missing in Affinity Designer and present in most competing products: a mobile App to view design live on the device. As I know you have the skills to make Apps, it would be helpful to create a viewer App on iOS which allows to see the design from Affinity Designer on iPhone and iPad (and Watch?) and tweak it live.

    Cheers

  5. Hi,

Some iOS 10 assets are provided by Affinity Designer but they are incomplete, using an outdated Font (SF UI Text instead of SF Pro) and not providing upcoming OSes like iOS 11. Right now, Apple provides all the latest designs here:

    https://developer.apple.com/design/resources/

However, they are providing it for Sketch, Adobe PS or Adobe XD. While Affinity Designer is able to open the PSD files (with some warnings), it is useless for any UI work as it's loading pixel layers instead of vector layers. So in order to compete with existing UI design tools, Affinity Designer should either be able to import PSD documents provided by Apple correctly or provide it's own full and up-to-date UIKit assets.

This is limiting the use of Affinity Designer a lot for mobile designers as recreating all standard widgets is time consuming and making the price of Affinity Designer non competitive (a few hours to create the missing UI elements * hourly rates = a lot more than buying Sketch). I bet that Android designers would want full material assets too.

Please consider making Affinity Designer more competitive for the UI Design market.

    Cheers

PS: another alternative would be to request Apple to add the affinity designer file format to the list provided. Good luck with that. But you won some ADA, so may be they would listen ;)

  6. I +1 this request. I have shown Affinity Designer to designers at my new job (nobody knew it BTW). They all loved it but the deal breaker is no invision plugin they use today with Sketch. It saves them so much time that they are not willing to switch even if they saw that Affinity was better in a lot of way than Sketch.

The ball is in your court now. Your move.

  7. I can't believe this is a problem in 2017 but it is and no reaction from Affinity about this. I got the exact same problems in UI design.

It's either you get snapping or pixel perfect but not both. This is a huge problem to make Affinity Designer usable. And I am not even talking about the results in the PDF format. You can see gap which do not exists in Affinity appear in the PDF.

I was questionned about it during a meeting, making me look unprofessional...

  8. Hi!

I have seen multiple people request animation tools in Affinity Designer but some said it would be too complex. However it's more and more a requirement for UI Designers so I was wondering if Affinity had a plan to compete with After Affects.

As they are already taking over photoshop, illustrator and later inDesign, sounds like another good take from Affinity :)

And with good compatibility with After Effect file format, it could be great to work with Airbnb Lottie.

    Cheers

  9. Seems your argument is self defeating. You say the book will be outdated. But, some one will digitize it and others d-load a 400+ page document that will be outdated, as if network connection is free. Repeat. Repeat.

"I think they should increase the price of AD by $10 ou $20 and include the ebook with it. That way, the mass effect that every licence sold is purchasing the book will covers the difference in price and you have more chance to convert ppl to your product."

This makes some sense, but are you sure that is enough to compensate the people who made the content? They not only know how to use the 'ware, but obviously have lots of previous practice. It may seem silly, but actually having a physical item that is intact and has one's name on the credit is remarkably valuable.

So you are implying that downloading a file as the same ecologic impact as cutting trees?

  10. hi,

I think it could be great if Affinity products embraced open format too.

I cannot stress enough the point highlighted below.

    http://mjtsai.com/blog/2017/03/13/sketchs-open-file-format/

Can you imagine what kind of new things will now be possible? One word: design automation (okay, two words!).

You want Artboards that showcase a font and its variations, like a Google Fonts page? There’s probably going to be a script to generate that file. There will be websites from which you can download freshly brewed Sketch files based on what you ask — say an image gallery, or a landing page, or a signup form. You’ll be able to pick your brand colors, choose a theme, randomize it, and voila! you have a Sketch design to start playing with. Someone could even build a Sketch equivalent that runs on the browser. The possibilities are many!

It's pretty obvious that the tools which will provide automation will destroy the traditional ones. I already discussed how not having the eBooks version of the Design Workbook was a mistake in another thread today but if AD miss that boat, I will clearly switch to Sketch because nothing can beat automation productivity.

  11. Tim, not having an eBook Workbook protects the value of the book others have paid for. Once there is an eBook, it finds its way into leaked links, shared sites and other mass-volume gimmees. While a hard cover can be loaned or given away, it doesn't become a mass-volume issue. I'm not affiliated with Affinity or Serif so this isn't an official response. I did purchase the pricey Workbook, I'm enjoying it, but I can see how I might feel ripped off if it was suddenly available as a free leak-link.

    Dogmatism.

    1. This is a book about a specific version of a software which means it will be outdated. Therefor, trees are dead for nothing. Just ecologic waste. I never buy any books about IT anymore. I buy ebooks or services like safari bookshelf.

    2. This is the era of tablets and digitals. Only publishing a book in paper is just sending the wrong signal to your customers. You look like old school thinker / grumpy grandpa "life was better before". Not very good when you want to sell software and get trust about the future.

    3. Whether you like it or not, even in physical format only, soon or late, somebody will scan it and create a PDF for free. There are even services to do it for you now. So better sell the ebooks yourself and grab some money. Let ppl supports you.

    4. This book is huge and we are in a global world now. I am currently living outside my country since years. All my books are now 100% digital which allows me to move anywhere without double thinking about buying a book. Right now, I would clearly not purchase a paper book of this size knowing I would have to handle it when I move back. Too heavy.

Not providing the ebooks won't change it will be available as a free leak-link. Putting your head in the sand do not change reality.

Worst, not being able to get this book easily just strengthen their competitors: most sketch users are impressed when I show them the marketing about AD. Now try to do what they show with available resources outside the book. Mostly impossible or you will have to waste hours to learn bit by bit here and there on forums / links / articles. So they stick to what they know: Sketch. Sales lost.

Actually, The WorkBook should be their weapon to get more market share, instead they have locked themselves into a niche. Affinity is a challenger here, it's not the guy already in place. I think they should increase the price of AD by $10 ou $20 and include the ebook with it. That way, the mass effect that every licence sold is purchasing the book will covers the difference in price and you have more chance to convert ppl to your product. Affininty would still be cheaper than their competitor but would give you the knowledge to outperform others from day 1.

Heck, they could even get outside the Mac App Store and get 30% of their money back to fund the book.

    Big missed opportunity.

  12. Hi,

Right now the export Persona assumes that you are always doing the @1x resolution, and only allows you to scale UP to @2x and @3x and complain when anything is not vector.

The reality of UI design is that you need to deal with raw images in your design, and even if they are sent as a maximum resolution, Affinity Designer doesn't let you say you are working at @3x and request scale DOWN version of @1x and @2x for example.

Please consider this feature. Having to downscale by hand is time consuming.

Ideally you would tell the layer in which resolution you are working (@1x, @2x or @3x) and then the slices view would create all the views to be exported based on it.
