I’m guessing it’s the margins, which are set when a file is created. You can edit margins in the document properties. 

I was unable to make  small rectangular selection - I could make the selection but if I let the mouse button go the selection kept disappearing.  It too some time to realise that the Feather setting was too big.
It might be better to simply allow the small selection when this happens and to ignore the feather value or at least pop up a message saying rectangle is smaller than feather value of xxx rather than relying on the user to figure out that some other setting is causing the selection to just disappear.  
The problem is that while dragging the mouse the selection shows perfectly fine but the moment you let the mouse button go -i.e. stop the selection - the selection box disappears with no indication why.
Not the end of the world but a simple usability fix is all that is required to save people like me an hour 🙂

OK so after closing the Affinity documents and then opening a new one the macro recorder has resized itself and docked on the left panel, so that problem fixed.

The images are product images on a white background so pretty good quality.
 
Presumably I can make a macro by recording the steps on an existing image - thanks for the pointer - I will give it a go.

As @crabtrem said make sure the layer is selected in the Layers panel. Also check if the layer is a Pixel layer (after the name of the layer). If it's identified as an Image layer, right-click on it and select Rasterise.... Tools that work at a pixel level only affect Pixel layers. Affinity Photo should do the conversion on the fly but this depends on the settings set in menu View ▸ Assistant Manager....
