There is some strange behaviour with changing text sizing with the keyboard shortcuts. Turns out there are several issues here:

1. I couldn't figure out why sometimes the shortcuts worked in 1 point increments and sometimes .1 point increments. It would seem that in small point sizes, it switches from 1 to .1 which I don't know if it's a bug but please I hope it is because it's annoying.

2. What's also strange is that it seemed at first that 9 point was the threshold... below that and it works in the smaller increments, but in playing around with it suddenly it changed to 10 point.

3. And then, I discovered that if I start at 10 point and use the shortcuts to reduce, it goes 10, 9.9, 9.8 9.7 and so on... but if I increase it goes 9.7, 9.8, 9.9, 10, 10.1, 11, 12 - what's with the 10.1?

4. Finally, the keyboard shortcuts listed in the menu don't work. It says Command > and Command < to increase or decrease but they do nothing. All they do is beep. What DOES work, is making it SHIFT-Command> etc.

UPDATE > I quit and restart Publisher and tried Command < again and now it's opening the Preferences window. What the!?

So it would seem there is something wrong here!

I can confirm your item #3.

I can confirm #4 on Windows: the proper shortcuts on Windows also use the shift key. Of course, on Windows they are Ctrl+Shift+> and Ctrl+Shift+<.

For your UPDATE, that actually explains what's going on with #4.

You must use the shift key to get a > or a < character. If you don't, you get a comma or a period. And Ctrl+comma is the shortcut for Preferences.

This illustrates a fundamental issue in the way that shortcuts are shown and described in all the Affinity applications. But in the end it comes down to the way that the keyboard is labeled.

Consider, for example:

  • The shortcut for Text > Find. It is described as Ctrl+F. Really, it's Ctrl+f (lower-case) but you get a lower-case f by pressing the keyboard key labeled F.
  • Ctrl+F (that is, Ctrl+Shift+f) doesn't do anything
  • Print: really Ctrl+p but described as Ctrl+P, which is how the "p" key is labeled.
  • Document Setup: really Ctrl+Shift+p but described as Ctrl+Shift+P because, again, the key is labeled P.
  • Preferences: Ctrl+,
  • Text > Size > Increase: Ctrl+Shift+comma (Ctrl+Shift+,) but described as Ctrl+< and < is how that key is labeled. You just need to use Shift to get it :)

Thanks Walt, I hadn't thought about needing the shift to get the < > symbols. But I think the menu should say Command Shift >.

As for my update about preferences, well d'uh!

And I still don't understand why the smaller increments at smaller sizes.

On my macBook keyboard the < is just 1 character key without shift (placed between shift and y) whereas > is "shift <":

I guess there is no such 1 standard for keyboard labels, especially not for the characters with modifier keys besides shift.
For instance Layer > Arrange > Move to front  is named in the menu as:

shift  command  ]

whereas I have to type

shift option command 6

Even this can be wrong, look at this strange Austrian keyboard labels ;)

Last but not least: did you experience yet what this Affinity shortcut option does if selected?:
