Affinity is displaying psd with AdobeRGB different as other programs

Recommended Posts

Hello, i'm just trying out Affinity Photo and like it very much so far. But i encountered a strange problem for which i don't have an explanation.

Here is what i did:

1. In Capture One 11 i chose "Edit with" for one of my Sony Raw files (ARW). In the popup i chose Format: PSD 16bit, ICC Profile: AdobeRGB(1998) Open with: Affinity Photo

2. On click Capture One creates an psd file and the picture opens in Affinity Photo 1.6.5.135. But the colors look different as in CaptureOne. Actually the colors look a lot like when i export the same picture as sRGB jpeg and open it e.g. in xnview.

3. The strange thing is: If i now assign the sRGB ICC profile in Affinity Photo (Document --> Assign ICC profile) to the picture it looks correct (as with AdobeRGB in Capture One and Xnview). See attached images.

Image All_AdobeRGB (First picture): The same image displayed by Capture One, Xnview and Affinity Photo 1.6.5.135 with the embedded ICC profile information AdobeRGB. You can clearly see that the colors in Affinity Photo are different to the two other programs.

Image sRGB_assigned_in_Affinity (Second Picture): The same image displayed by Capture One and Xnview with the embedded ICC profile information AdobeRGB. And the same image displayes by Affinity Photo 1.6.5.135 with the sRGB color profile assigned. Now all three look more or less the same. Very strange for me.

OS: Win10 Pro

Does someone have an explanation?

Hi nomadicfreedom,

Welcome to the forum.

How does the image look if you open the RAW directly with Affinity Photo and also when Edit with selecting a different format such as TIFF?

Can you provide a download link to the RAW or PM me.

Hello Lee,

thank you. When selecting TIFF the behavior is exactly the same as with the psd. The color is different to the two other programs.

The unprocessed RAW looks different again. But that is what i expected.

Here another user is reporting something that looks very similar.

I'll send you raw and psd via pm.

The first screenshot attached is the .PSD file opened up in PS and Affinity Photo (1.6.7) on a monitor with AdobeRGB set as its colour profile. The colour match is  close when side by side.

The second screenshot is the .ARW file opened in Lightroom, I then used Edit In Affinity Photo and PS with the below settings to the same monitor as above. Again the colour match is close.

File Format: PSD

Color Space: AdobeRGB

Bit Depth: 16bits

I also repeated the process but exporting to .TIFF, when compared the colours are almost identical. None of them have a noticeable difference like your first image, but we don't have Capture One or XnView to do more comparisons and we don't know how they are handling colour profiles. If they have any options to display the image settings could you check them to see what the colour profile is showing as.

Thank you for checking this. Unfortunately i don't have Photoshop. But i downloaded FastStone image viewer, which shows the image the same as Capture One and xnview. Seems you are on a Mac. Do you or one of your colleagues have the possibility to test this on Windows? The guy in the linked thread above with the same problem is using windows, too. Maybe it is related to the OS.

Other difference i see is that you are using a newer  version 1.6.7 vs. 1.6.5 which is the newest version i could download for windows. Is it possible that something was fixed there?

I would like to test if this still happens in the 1.7 beta. I saw in another thread that an issue was fixed with AP showing strange colors. But since i didn't buy Affinity Photo yet i can't. And i don't want to buy it with this issue ;) Any chance i can try the beta?

Yes, you can buy it and refund it in the first 14 days. They have a money back guarantee.

This is not a recommendation to do so. Just the only way and you asked.

This is a problem I'm having also.  Colours more saturated in Affinity.  Especially it would seem the reds.

I've attached a screenshot showing the same file open in 3 different programs.

Irfanview and MS photo viewer have a similar colour output.  But Affinity is noticeably different.  I cannot find a way to change this so all programs show the same.

Windows 10, Affinity 1.6.5.135.
