If you create a path, click on Mask on the Context toolbar.

You must have the pen tool selected. Not the Node tool.

You must also be using Affinity Photo, because Affinity Designer does not have that option on the Context toolbar.

Here are a couple of ways to mask any object with any other object, in both Photo and Designer.

The mask can even be a group of various types of objects.

In Layers panel:

  1. ensure the masking object is above the object to be masked
  2. right-click masking object and pick "Mask to below"

Or also in Layers panel:

  1. drag the masking object onto the thumbnail of the object to be masked
  2. drop when a vertical blue bar can be seen to the right of the thumbnail

It is worth pointing out that in both those cases, the shape must have a fill. It will not work if the shape is transparent.

There can be no fill. A stroke masks, too. I've been working on something today that uses stroked straight lines as a vector mask.

How do you do that ? ?

If I draw a shape, like this

and Mask to Below, I get this

If I fill the shape, I get this.
