toddlauzon Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Like the titles states, dense charcoal (vector) brush, stretches when applied to certain objects instead of repeating giving inconsistent results. Quote Apple M1 MacbookPro, Mac OS Sonoma 14.3
Staff NathanC Posted December 20, 2024 Staff Posted December 20, 2024 Hi @toddlauzon, To confirm, is this the same 'Dense Charcoal' brush found in the 'Dry Media' default vector brush category? If so, I can only ever get it to repeat when applied to curves. Could you also share a sample file where it repeats on these objects? Thanks! Quote
Old Bruce Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 The only way I can get the same result is to actively change the Body:... to Stretch from the default Repeat while the ellipse is chosen. Also note that there seems to be something wrong with the Brush window, the bottom is overlapped with the brush design, the buttons for Reset, Save As... and Close are cut off. And yes I'm referring to de Dense Charcoal brush (Auto Close). DenseCharcoal.afdesign Quote Apple M1 MacbookPro, Mac OS Sonoma 14.3

I don't think anything is wrong with the brush. There is something quite wrong with the eyes (my assumption). Change either to have a solid stroke and try to get the alignment to change from Centre to Inside or Outside. Nothing happens for me here. loukash Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 13 hours ago, toddlauzon said: DenseCharcoal.afdesign There is something corrupt with the two orange objects: When "Scale with object" is disabled, then the brush will appear stretched, no matter the Body properties. Also, Align Stroke seems to have no effect on them at all. loukash Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 Also, it's not just the Dense Charcoal brush, which would mean that the object is the culprit. lepr Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 The particular textured brush is not the problem. The issue has been in Affinity's textured stroke algorithms since v1 days. The rendering of an object's stroke is affected by the object's transformation matrix, which can result in stretching/shrinking of the texture that is to be repeated along a path. The OP's example has the texture being transformed such that only one repeat of the transformed texture gets fitted along the path, and so the result becomes the same as a stretch-mode stroke. Here is a v1 document making the issue apparent using ellipses and two-node lines: repeat-mode strokes.afdesign All of the objects have exactly the same stroke applied to them but vary greatly in appearance because the objects have differing scaling transforms. The screenshots below show that you may get a more acceptable result by enabling 'Scale with object' for the stroke. Quote
lepr Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 @toddlauzon A couple of workarounds in this screenshot: Quote
toddlauzon Posted December 23, 2024 Author Posted December 23, 2024 Thanks for all the help everyone. I ended up just grabbing an elipse that was repeating properly and updated with that one. I’ll keep that workaround handy @lepr, thanks! lepr 1 Quote Apple M1 MacbookPro, Mac OS Sonoma 14.3
