Seems some ai files not saved as pdf compatible file, can not be opened in Affinity Designer...or...
Probably old news and mentioned here before. Still thought worth mentioning.

This isn't a bug. Affinity cannot open Ai files which do not contain a PDF stream. See this previous discussion (This is an old thread but, AFAIK, Ai is still a proprietary file format!):
