DogHouseGraphics Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 I am curious if anyone has developed an Adobe/Affinity menu icon equivilancy (cross-reference) guide for us BNG types? If so, I'd love to know about it. Quote
Alfred Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 Are you really asking specifically about menu icon equivalence, rather than menu entry equivalence more generally? Please explain what ‘us BNG types’ are. Quote Alfred Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for Windows • Windows 10 Home/Pro Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for iPad • iPadOS 17.5.1 (iPad 7th gen)
MikeTO Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 I haven't seen any comparison tables of Adobe and Affinity menu commands. I started to create such a table for InDesign and Publisher but abandoned the idea because it was too complicated to explain differences in a table. For example, InDesign might have a menu command to do something for which Publisher has an option in a panel or dialog, or vice versa. Instead, I've just added tips for some key differences in my Publisher manual to help InDesign switchers. I assume those who have written manuals for Photo and Designer have added similar tips. DogHouseGraphics Posted September 25, 2024 Author Posted September 25, 2024 MikeTO; Thanks for the input on this topic, and I can well understand how this could eaisly turn into a can of worms. Alfred; BNG is a U.S. Army acronym meaning 'Brand New Guy'. It was a term used to describe newly arrived in-country replacements. To tell the truth I'm not certain if its in use anymore, but old habits die hard. Alfred 1 Quote
MikeCPH Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 The idea of having a help cross-reference for folks trying out Affinity products coming from Adobe is a great. It would not only be helpful for users to get up to speed faster but as a sales tool to allow testers to find specific features they are used to using in Adobe and see if Affinity has a comparable one. An example was I wanted to see if Photo has something similar to Actions in Photoshop. Typing "Actions" in the help site did turn up "Macros" but way down in the list of low scoring results. Type in "Composer" or "World-Ready" (I use this to have Hebrew text show up correctly) and I get nothing. A result showing that Publisher doesn't have a particular feature is ok in that at least I now know and didn't find out much later. The benefit of other users showing how they overcome a certain short-coming as part of the result would be welcome. It could also be an opportunity to highlight how Affinity has raised the bar in a particular area and link/explain how they've improved the process. I really see this as just a filter/selection in the help sites for each of the apps. Another would be to start something in the forums (maybe a spreadsheet?) where users could comment and keep it very accessible and easily updated. Somehow allowing the users to input their workarounds and vote for feature requests for those that are not in Affinity yet would be powerful. Quote
Pšenda Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 Very often some users here define themselves against Affinity applications in a way - that "Serif" is presented/claimed/declared that ASuite "is" an equivalent/clone/killer of some competing product - and therefore how is it possible (and it is completely unimaginable and unbelievable ), that ASuite doesn't have some of the features of a competing product, or that it does something a little differently than the "copied" product, etc. That Serif never claimed anything like that is of course clear, but if he were created some required cross-reference table comparing ASuite vs a competing product, he would thereby defacto conceding this pursuit of equivalence. Therefore, I personally think that such an explicit official Serif comparison will not be created, and that it is rather up to the users to create something like this (perhaps based on personal experience, or when they come across something like this on the Internet) - after all, that's what the Tutorials thread is for.
