Problem With Design Not Showing On The Export .png

Recommended Posts

So when I go to export and turn a file into a .png, when I do this with the design in black, it shows up in the export viewfinder .png window, but when I don't change a thing, but the color of my design to White, and try to export it as a .png, nothing shows up in the viewfinder .png window..  I am at a loss here.. again, the only thing different is I cjhange my design from black to white..

Hi @Rie and welcome to the forums,

Is your design a white object on a white background (i.e. the default white canvas) or does it sit on a different coloured background or a transparent background? If the former, and as a test, change the document background to transparent - Document Setup, Colour Tab, Click Transparent background and then export to PNG... Do you now see a preview of your design?

If not, can you upload the Affinity file so we can take a look?

So yes, I have been doing this with a transparent background, and yes, not seeing the white font on the transparent background when I go to export it as a PNG. Also, I do have that selected as selection only, so that it’s only picking up on everything I highlighted, which was all the layers of the design.

Hi @Rie,

Thanks for confirming…

Can you upload your Affinity file so we can take a look at what is happening?

Hi @Rie,

The 'You' text is an image (raster) rather than a vector layer so if you select the 'You' layer in the Pixel Persona of Designer by Cmd Clicking the layer icon and then filling the layer with a white fill you can change it to white text.

Selecting the 'You' layer in the Designer Persona and changing its colour to white fills the whole canvas with white hiding the vector text layers which is why you don't see anything in the Preview window when exporting the file...

You don't have a Transparent background for your file.

And then there is the Pixel layer for "You". The black isn't RGB black it is very dark grey so you'll have to mess about to get it to be actual white.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Thank you!! I will follow the screen instructions per your screen recording.. and thaks old Bruce :)

Was curious, isn't it best practice to save all in curves so if another party i am working with doesn't have that font style, this is best correct?

Conformation question; When i save somethine in Convert to Curves, is that the same as a vector file.. .epsor .svg?

Hi @Rie,

If the ‘You’ object was originally drawn using the Pen tool then it would remain in vector format as a curves layer like all the other layers which is ideally what you want and yes converting any text the curves does mean anyone without the font installed could select elements within the design and change the fill colour easily but for some reason the ‘You’ object had been rasterised unnecessarily…

You could either recreate that element from scratch by redrawing the ‘Y’ and adding the ‘ou’ again converting the ‘ou’ to curves or export just the ‘Y’ or ‘You’ object in black as a PNG and use a free online vectoriser to convert it to an SVG… Open the SVG in Designer then replace the pixel layer with the SVG layer so everything in the design is in a vector format.

Then if you need to give the artwork to someone else who doesn’t have Designer you could export the design as an SVG or PDF where all elements would remain as vectors and be easily editable…

Hi @Rie,

If on Mac, Cmd click the layer icon, if on Windows Ctrl click the layer icon, you should then see the marching ants, if not check that ‘Show Pixel Selection’ is enabled under the View Menu…

Not understaning why i your screen recording you are able to highlight the Y by clicking on the Y pixel layer, and I am not..???

Are you definitely holding down the Cmd Key when you click the Layer Icon?

Edit: Just saw your previous post, glad it's all working now...

The 'it' layer is a Vector curve so you don't need to select it in the same way as the 'You' layer (the raster layer).

Select it and all the other layers in the Designer Persona and just change the fill colour to white (38 sec mark in the screen recording)...
