Hi!

I have an issue with opacity for a pixel layer in Designer. If I use the Vector Crop Tool to crop a pixel layer, the opacity does not match the original layer in appearance (or a layer cropped via clipping with a rectangle for example). The opacity of a cropped layer with the Vector Crop Tool seems lower than normal.

Steps to reproduce:

import a bitmap file, set the layer opacity to anything lower than 100% (I noticed it at 80%), then grab the Vector Crop Tool and start dragging any handles on the layer, you will immediately see the opacity change.

I've attached screenshots and also a video showing the issue.

Is this a bug or is it something that I am not aware of (maybe color management related?)

This is on Windows 11, Designer v2.5.3, on a new document with sRGB color profile and RGB/8 color format, no artboards.

Thanks!

FWIW, I tried this with both Pixel & Image layers in AD 2.5.3 on my Mac & was unable to duplicate this change in opacity.

Thanks for testing. I have since tried with other imported images with the same result.

Until someone figures out a fix, I'll stay away from using the Vector Crop Tool and just use clipping.

It might help if you'd provide a sample .afdesign file which reproduces the problem.

Thanks for your report @olias32!

I can confirm this is a known issue which is logged with our development team to be resolved - I'll be sure to 'bump' this issue with them now to bring it to their attention once again.

I hope this helps :)

Is this a Windows only thing?

No, it has been a bug in the Mac apps for many years.

Odd. It seems to be working fine for me on my Mac running Catalina.

@R C-R I checked on MacOS, it does the same thing. It may not jump when you grab the handles like it does in Win, but see the image below for side by side comparison of the same image, same opacity (80%), left cropped with the Vector Crop Tool, and right just a rectangle clipping.

Maybe you missed this, and were just looking for the jump in opacity when grabbing the handles.

This is what I get with a pixel layer (history included). Vector crop test.afdesign

As far as I can tell, that layer remains at 80% after cropping it. I get the same results with groups, vector shapes, & so on.

I tried this on your file with the same result.

See below, the visual difference in opacity is clear even though both the cropped layer and the default one are at 80%. For me on Windows the difference is even visible in the thumbnail in the file explorer :)

I've attached the file as well. Does it look right when you open it on your system? Meaning do you see both images as having the same opacity?
