I use Ancestry family tree make and I can generate an A4  family history PDF in Microsoft print to PDF format.  I would like to put this in an Affinity Designer A5 Booklet. What is the best way about setting out to achieve this please?

If Ancestry Family Tree Maker creates PDFs at A4 size, why not use the same size for your Affinity Designer document? You can always scale it down on output.

Simply spoken: 1.) Create the A5 document and 2.) place the A4 image source.

Presumably the orientation of the image and/or the layout pages and spreads is relevant, as is any desired scaling. Also the orientation of the spine may matter (horizontal or vertical?).

What do you have and what do you want? Can you show screenshots of your Affinity document with the placed image and tell what you don't like in your setup?

@Alfred.  Sounds like a good solution. Can you elaborate on how to scale down please so it ends up as an A5 booklet.  Cheers John

Just a couple of thoughts:

1) As far as I'm aware Affinity Designer can't create 'booklets' - it's a vector design program best used to create single-page documents. If your original A4 document has more than one page; and you want to produce it as a booklet with consecutive pages; and you want to use an Affinity app, then Affinity Publisher offers many more useful options than Designer.

2) You've probably already thought about this, but if you rescale A4 to A5, then everything shrinks to half its size, including type. If you have 10pt type in your original, it will scale down to around 5pt. Anything much smaller is going to be uncomfortable if not impossible to read for any length of time. Rules round boxes will also shrink - a 0.5pt rule will become a 0.25pt rule, and depending on the print and paper quality may start to break up. You also risk losing image detail.

If it was me I would create single-page pdfs from every page in your original MSWord doc. I would then create an A5 document in Affinity Publisher with the required number of pages. For each page in Publisher, I would use File>Place, select the corresponding pdf, position it on the page and then drag in the corners, not the edges to rescale it without distorting its shape.

Affinity Photo 2.5.3,  Affinity Designer 2.5.3, Affinity Publisher 2.5.3, Mac OSX 14.5, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel.

Not really. The DIN A format steps reduce by ~71%, not 50%, accordingly a 10 pt text results in 7pt, not 5pt. Although/while/whereas two A5 pages make one A4 page. (edge lengths versus area)

A4 = 210 x 297 mm
      x 71%
     = 149.1 x 210.87 mm
     ~ A5

Firstly I wrote Affinity designer and that should of read Affinity Publisher so apologies for that. I also apologise for not looking at the family history program in greater depth.  I think I have found the solution. On revisiting the family tree program I found that I can set  a page size size to A5 and export as an RTF file, so I am getting somewhere, Thank you everybody for answering my query I will now get back to the drawing board.  Once again heart felt apologies for taking up peoples time..  Cheers John
