Here the eraser tool is drawing in black on the mask, but the brush tool (black or white) doesn't do anything.

The pixel layer above it has been rasterized.

Is this a glitch, or am I missing something?

TIA

I have a feeling that this file is corrupted, because I can't change the brush size and hardness with option/command/drag either, and that works fine in other files.

Unfortunately I can't send it in for examination.

I guess I'll have to copy/paste some layers into a new file and try that.

One thing that would prevent the Paint Brush Tool from effecting a mask is if Protect Alpha is enabled in the Context Toolbar. But it sounds like there could be more going on if you’re having issues with the brush size and hardness.

We only need the two layers in a new file, from the screenshot. Make a copy of the file, remove everything else, save as new file or copy/paste into new file.

As always in case brushes seem to be not working:

  • create a new pixel layer on top
  • try to paint on this pixel layer.
  • Use a fresh new basic round brush
  • deselect all
  • check all relevant brush, color and layer settings
    • brush and color and layer opacity
    • protect alpha
    • wet edges
    • flow
    • opacity
    • check the „more“ brush settings like accumulation, etc
    • blend mode of brush
    • channels panel (reset to allow all channels viewed and edited)
  • Check if painting works in new document
  • check if copy/paste layer into new document get it working

Thanks for the list. Very helpful.

The screenshot doesn't show what's really going on. There are probably 125 layers in this picture, not including inherent masks. :) And that probably is what's created the opportunity for it to get confused.

Everything works fine in other documents, it's just this one picture.
