Installation problems with Publisher 2.4

Recommended Posts

I just purchased and downloaded the latest updated version of Publisher (2.4.0), but I have a problem. It installed the entire package on my C drive without giving me an option to install it on another drive (the previous, earlier demo version was installed on D:). And it doesn't create a desktop icon. That meant I had two versions installed, but only one icon, linking to the older version.

I uninstalled the older version and it deleted the icon, but I've searched C and can't find the .exe file anywhere. Without a desktop icon I can't access the program except through the settings menu.

Can you tell me the file location so I can create a shortcut to the new version? And is there a way to get it installed on D:?
Thanks

PS: I had tried to update the demo from the 2.3 version but instead it simply went ahead and installed a second copy on C drive, so I had two versions, but only the older one had an icon. I uninstalled both. I was surprised that it didn't simply update the existing installation instead of installing a second copy.

I believe you've installed the sandboxed MSIX version which defaults to installing on your C drive. Do you know if you installed from MSIX last time but went through the steps to change the destination? If not, you might have installed the un-sandboxed MSI/EXE version which allows you to choose the destination. You can find more information in these FAQs.

I installed the only file presented for download when I purchased the license. There were no instructions about alternatives or links to them.

The demo version of 2.3 allowed me to choose my drive and created a desktop icon. The update and the version I downloaded after purchasing did not.

Can you tell me where I might find the "unsandboxed" version, and will it create a desktop icon?

Thanks

You can create a desktop icon for the sandboxed version - instructions are in the FAQ. You have to do it yourself but that's a limitation of this newer form of installer. But yes, the un-sandboxed version will create a desktop icon.

You can download either type of installer from the Serif store: https://store.serif.com/account/downloads/. Click the blue EXE links to download the un-sandboxed versions.

I'm not a Windows user so that's the extent of my knowledge. 🙂 Good luck.

Sorry if I seem thick, but *which* of the many FAQs on the page has the information about creating the icon and providing the file location? I should repeat that I have run several searches and manually checked folders on the C drive without finding the EXE file.

Any of them that are for Windows, and reference MSIX in the title, should be relevant.

On the List of all V2 FAQ pages, in the Windows section:

The Affinity MSIX installer installs the apps in:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\SerifEuropeLtd

The WindowsApps folder is hidden by default. To unhide the folder, in File Explorer, click the View tab. In the ribbon, enable Hidden items (put a check in the box).

Now you can see the WindowsApps folder, but the folder's ownership properties will likely have to be changed in order to view the contents of the folder. If you try to open the folder and get the message “To gain access to this folder you need to use the security tab,” here's an article that explains how to change the folder's ownership properties (see Method 1).

Note: I had to change the owner of the folder to Administrators (plural) instead of Administrator.

Thanks. I got an icon on my desktop using the Shell:AppsFolder tip, but I can't move the app to drive D as I had wanted (WIn 11 just won't let me). But I will continue to work with the app.

You may need to uninstall the MSIX version and download/install via the EXE installer instead.

Thanks. I tried the .exe installer on another laptop and it did what I wanted, so I suppose I can un/re-install it on my main laptop. I only have a 512GB SSD on the main device so I want to keep it as clean as possible. It's got the best GPU so I like to use it for both graphics and games, but the C drive fills up with all the extraneous stuff programs add pretty quickly.
