Knife tool

I think that the idea of the Knife tool is a great feature. I checked out the instructions on how to use it and they make sense. However the instructions do not tell you how to separate the parts!

Having used the tool to cut document in half I do not know how to separate them.

They should be separated by default but both parts remain selected.
If it becomes a curves  object, go to layer>geometry>separate curves.

Thanks for that but I assume that the Knife tool only applies to shapes. Is that correct? It would be more helpful if it said this in the manual!

However I'm trying to cut a jpeg image in half. Should it still work?

Yes it's a vector knife tool but you can convert to curves first ,this will do the trick on a placed image.
But there's currently a bug that resizes the content which you could reset in the gradient tool.

If you want to cut an image up into little pieces, this might be of some use:

It doesn’t use the Knife Tool but uses the Vector Flood Fill Tool instead.
