Bad Selection of Building outline

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have used the selection brush to try and select the outline of a building. Unfortunately the selection boundary (ants) don't lock onto the main outline, but a darker line inside the buildings outline.

If I could nudge the boundary line a bit, I could get it to sit on the actual outline of the building.

Is this possible?

Perhaps I am going about this the wrong way?

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Is it a single layer image? Is the correct layer selected in the Layers panel? Tolerance and where do you click?

The building and sky have almost identical colors, making it impossible for the selection brush to find edges.

Best option is to use lasso tool to remove unwanted parts of the selection (set to subtractive mode).

Alternatively, use Quick mode to paint with black or white to add/remove unwanted parts.

Another option is to add shapes like rectangle to create edges where needed, merge visible, and do the selection on the merged layer. Then deactivate or delete helper layers.

If I interpret the attached screenshot correctly, the selection also includes darker parts of the building, including black, so it doesn't look like a problem with low tolerance and not finding edges.

Perhaps a sample file or a video with the selection procedure would be interesting.

P.S. If I click with the Flood Fill Tools in the white part of the image, the edges of the building will be selected.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

The background of the document is apparently an original image:

In the layer above that, the image is somehow modified - it is darker (even though you have some adjustment layers on top of the image, it looks like you've done some destructive editing - which is a shame because it can't be edited and fixed anymore), and the building is somehow partially shifted (see the duplicate part of the tower on the left, and the damaged roof of the house on the right).

What exactly do you want to achieve with the modifications?

I'll try the lasso.

Why, the selection brush does a pretty good job

Just use a small brush around the edges of the building, then the center and then use the Refine dialog to touch up any areas needed

Your document is a little confusing though so you may want to flatten it or merge all layers to a new one and work on that

Have spent a couple of hours working on my image. Did a load of stuff with the refine tool. While I think I have a better idea of how that works now, it's not really the tool that I needed.

I found when I kept on using the selection brush I could actually move the dotted line/ants. However, I only seemed to be able to move it one way. Then when I started to investigate the Add and Subtract buttons, I could move the dotted line pretty much as I wanted by selecting on or the other of the Add or Subtract buttons. Selection now looks a lot more accurate.

Starting to feel like I'm actually making some progress with affinity now 🙂

Thanks all!

Andrew
