Affinity Publisher 2.2: Delete key no longer working

Recommended Posts

I just updated Publisher 2.x to 2.2 and now the delete key no longer works on my keyboard on Mac desktop. When I select a text box, picture box, graphic, etc. and then hit the delete key, nothing happens. This function was working earlier today before updating Publisher to 2.2. It works as expected in Designer, Photo (note: I have not updated Designer and Photo to 2.2. yet), all Adobe apps, etc. but no longer works in Publisher 2.2. The only way I can delete a text box is to select it, and then click on the trash can in the layer window.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this a bug of 2.2? Any fixes?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't updated Publisher yet, but I did update Designer and I'm having the same issue – can only delete an element by choosing it in the layers palette then right clicking > delete or clicking the trash icon.

Thanks!

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback, jeffofthenorth!

You can resolve the problem by restoring the default shortcuts. On macOS, choose Affinity Publisher/Designer/Photo 2 > Settings, click Shortcuts, and then click Serif Defaults. On Windows, choose Edit > Preferences, click Shortcuts, and then click Reset.

But to fix just this one shortcut without resetting all your shortcuts, change the shortcut for Edit > Delete to the Delete key.

This problem likely occurred because of an issue in 2.1.1 that was fixed in 2.2.0. In 2.1.1, there wasn't actually a shortcut for Delete, you just had it because it was carried over from the previous version. If you had clicked Serif Defaults or Reset in that version you would have lost the shortcut. The shortcut was restored in 2.2.0 but you have to add it back yourself, or click Serif Defaults / Reset.

Good luck.

Thanks, MikeTo. I have uninstalled 2.2 and reverted back to 2.1 (and the delete key currently works as expected) but I will upgrade again to 2.2 and try your suggestions.

Seems unusual that using the delete key as expected is a keyboard shortcut. Thanks again for the information.

Thanks! That did work for me.

Yep, this worked for me as well. I can't figure out why this common method of deleting something has to be reconfigured in an app's settings, but so be it. Thanks again for your solution.

same problem..no delete

and editing the shortcut delete to delete key does not work

Try clicking Reset in Shortcuts (Windows) or Serif Defaults (Mac) and see if that works for you.

Good luck

I had the same problem in both Designer and Publisher after updating to 2.2: couldn’t delete nodes in Node tool and couldn’t delete items/layers. Both these things worked only from the context menu where it still actually showed the Backspace key as shortcut.

I first made it work again by specifically adding the keyboard shortcut ⌫ to the Menu Item “Edit --> Delete” … but

… now the problem keeps reappearing in a Designer document. Working on this document somehow makes Designer stuck sometimes when adding new linked resources (it has many pixel layers from a time in which I didn’t know about the option to link files, now I’m adding new images or replacing old ones through linked resources). After getting stuck, the Backspace key stops working when I try to delete items or layers from the document. I have to end and reopen Designer for it to work again.

I have to correct myself: After writing this post, Designer let me delete items/layers via the backspace key again – without having to restart the app. So it might be, the whole thing was completely unrelated. However, before, when the problem appeared, everything else worked again after the short freeze except for the backspace key. I’ll keep an eye on this and post more detailed info if anything comes up.

The issue "(After upgrading) Backspace is not functional until assigned on Mac" (REF: AF-287) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.2.1.2052".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us.
