Find & Replace - doesn't display target correctly

Recommended Posts

Usually when you search with Find & Replace it takes you to the first result and displays the result in the centre of the window at the same zoom level you were already at.

But sometimes it doesn't. I played with it for a long time today and sometimes it fails to centre the target either horizontally or vertically, but the target is still somewhere visible. Once this happens it's just a matter of time before it will fail to display the target entirely - you will have to scroll or zoom out to find it. Double clicking the search result will also fix the display. This isn't a new issue and I experienced it in v1, too, but I hadn't been annoyed by it enough until today to figure out the pattern.

To replicate this, you need a small screen (I use a 14" laptop screen) and be zoomed in so you can't see the whole page. I can replicate it within 30 seconds with my document after a fresh start of Publisher.

This isn't the most important bug, it's just a minor annoyance.

Publisher appears to get 'confused' to differing degrees depending on the document zoom level... FWIW, I tested this with 56 instances of the search term in a document using different document zoom levels with the following results...

The numbers indicate the nth instance where the search term wasn't shown in the document window at the respective zoom level...

Hi @DWright,

I've attached the file so you can test as well... repeated testing with the same file yields differing results to those shown in the table but it's fundamentally the same 'issue', i.e., certain instances of the search term are not displayed in the viewport when selected in the Find and Replace window.

I imagine the results could easily vary based on the screen resolution and/or screen size so it would be interesting to see if you see similar (albeit slightly different) results based on the various zoom levels... :)

Workflow to Reproduce

  1. Open the attached Publisher File
  2. Double-click Page 1 in the Pages panel
  3. Set the zoom level in the Navigator Panel for each test interaction, 100%, 150%, 200% and so on...
  4. Enter Alice in the Find field of the Find and Replace panel and click in but don't enter anything in the Replace field, click Find - this will yield 56 results
  5. Starting from the top of the search results, click each, one by one, and note the nth instances where the word Alice doesn't appear in the viewport
  6. Click through all 56 instances until you reach the end of the document
  7. Repeat steps 2 to 6 changing the zoom level for step 3 in the Navigator panel to successive zoom levels
  8. Note the results

I had the same inconvenient (14" @1147x745…)

Of course, when I tried to reproduce it tonight, everything was all right — usually not centered but well in the zoomed window. Though I once encountered an apparently hidden search result. In fact, in this case it was only obfuscated by the Text ruler (I searched for eau). Hard to see…
