Support for Compressed RAW Files

Recommended Posts

Hello Affinity team,

I am using SONY alpha A7IV that can produce compressed RAW files that are lossless, just smaller in size.
Unfortunately Affinity does not support this type of files.
My current Affinity version is 1.10.6.1665.

Is it possible to add support of this file type.

Thank You,
I. Lavi

As far as I know, all RAW files are "lossless". Since it is a recording of data taken from the sensor, which must then be converted into image data when developed, it would not be possible otherwise/lossy.

Serif has already finished development of version 1.

If you mean the ILCE-7M4 (A7-IV) then that camera is supported in Photo V2, but not in Photo V1 according to the FAQs. I would not expect it to be added to V1, as development has ended there as @Pšenda mentioned.

If you are using the built-in Serif-provided RAW engine, support largely follows what is released by libraw, and they supposedly added support for this camera in version 0.21: https://www.libraw.org/news/libraw-0-21-release

That release is long after development of Photo v1 ended, so you won't be getting support in v1, as others have mentioned.  I don't know if 0.21 has made it into the v2 series yet but it should soon if it has not already.

What that does not indicate is whether or not this specific format of the camera was added as supported.

Information about how to interpret those files is evidently available: https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/10556

It is not clear from what I am finding if even Apple's RAW engine supports those files either, otherwise you would have the option of using Apple's RAW engine instead of Serif's if you are on a Mac, and if macOS does support that format, then you could potentially use that even with v1.

I'm still not able to open Sony's "lossless" compressed RAWs (medium-sized), and yes, I'm using the latest version 2.3. I can only open these files with Sony's Imaging Edge software. Is Sony demanding too high of a licensing fee to be able to open these (or are they locked into an exclusive w/Adobe)? It's been a while now, and it gets super tiring/time-consuming to use Imaging Edge in my workflow. Please let us know if there's anything the community can do if maybe some social pressure can help.
