Hi everyone,

not sure if this issue has still been raised.

While opening large DXF files, it propose a scale different from 1:1.

In the attached case you may notice a 1:2 scale. It had been set suddenly after original file opening.

I create a rectangle with a specific dimension (let's say 600x450mm)

When I convert it into an artboard, Designer scales accordingly to it's proposed scale, reducing the whole file half the original size (1:2 in my case).

Is there a way to force 1:1 DXF-DWG file opening even on large files?

Is there a max artboard size that forces to scale down large files when unable to fit them all?

Thank you so much.

Hi @mak,

According to the help file...

"Any drawing scale used in the CAD document is automatically applied to the new document (shown in File > Document Setup and when using the Measure Tool)".

Though your description suggests your original document uses 1:1 rather than 1:2 scaling, is that correct?

Of course it is 1:1, according to almost every CAD file. Anyway I tried to save one part of the whole file in original DWG and while opening (yes) it use 1:1 instead of 1:2.

Are you happy to upload both a dxf and dwg version of the original file so we can take a look?

Coming back late to this with a solution after fighting it for a while:

  • export in format AutoCAD 2018 (i.e. 'AC1032') - this option is available in most CAD software, including OnShape
  • When importing in Affinity Designer 2, change the "selection" item to either Single Page or All Pages (with older version, only the "model" option is available - do NOT pick that option)

It will then work appropriately.

Hi @SachaLab,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Thanks for your feedback/sharing a solution.
Could you, or anyone else experiencing this issue, share a DWG or DXF file that fails to import with the correct scale set, so we can inspect it please?
It should work appropriately without workarounds.

Hello Meb,

Yes, absolutely, I'm sharing two files exported from OnShape: one in release 14, one in release 2018 (both with the same settings otherwise). You can get access to the source file here (you must be logged in to your OnShape account though).

With release 14, only the "Model" option is available in "Selection":

And upon opening, the transform view shows a 1:2 ratio:

And the measure tool shows the same 1:2 mm ratio.

When measuring, the distance are correct (497.2mm in that example), but only because the drawing scale is set to 1:2, if you revert it to 1:1, the size doesn't work anymore obviously. This means that when exporting to, say, SVG, the document is half the proper size.

Switching to 1:1 shows the problem:

While when opening the file in version 2018, two additional "Selection" options are offered: Single Page or All Pages. Selecting those remove the need to pick a unit (as the unit is embedded in the DXF information already):

And the measurement works out and is set to 1:1 by default (same for the transform panel):

(Using Affinity Designer 2.6.2 on Mac OS X 15.4 on M1)
