I only tested this with the Alice's Adventures sample but I can make minor changes to it (like moving a layer & then undoing the move) & then save it as a new file using File > Save as...

I can then open that saved version without it being locked.

EDIT: I just noticed the same thing is possible in AD V2.0.3, & that in either one if I just try to close the 'locked' file, I get the usual warning about it not being saved & if click the Save button in that dialog, it lets me save an unlocked copy to a folder of my choice like my Desktop folder.

All the samples in v2 are now unlocked :)

Then why is there a lock symbol at the end of the file name in the status tab in the toolbar?

Because you cannot save directly back to it. It would be impractical. But everything else (save as, export, etc) is enabled.

OK, but you have to admit it is a bit confusing that the samples are unlocked, yet they have a lock symbol there.

Anyway, since they are not really locked why not allow them to be downloaded to a location of the user's choice instead of (on Macs) to the var folder that gets cleared on restarts?

Because that would require more dialogs, or more Preferences, for a seldom-used scenario? Can't you Open Finder and move them yourself?

Currently, they are downloaded to an obscure location in private/var/folders that most users do not even know exists, nor can it be opened easily other than by using Go > Go to folder & entering exactly "/private/var" in the "Go to folder" field; or by using the File > Reveal in Finder menu item after it has been opened in one of the V2 apps.

Besides, it would only require one new dialog if the Save option was not greyed out & simply asked for a location to save the file in. No need for any preference setting. In fact, if you just try to close the sample file after editing it (even if it is just one edit that is immediately undone so the file is then exactly like the original), in the warning dialog that opens to tell you the change(s) have not been saved, there is a Save button that does exactly that.
