In the photos app on Mac OS I right click on an image and choose 'edit with Affinity Photo 2'. The image comes into Photo 2 fine. I can then make some adjustments (but for arguements sake, just levels).  If you then try and save the file Photo 2 will crash after you put the file name in and press Save.

You need to flatten your image before saving back into Apple photos. Document -> Flatten.

Hello Paul,

Many thanks for this clue, I wasn't aware of that.  However, I was trying to save the file as an Affinity Photo native file into a folder so that I could continue editing at some point.
